hvac advise,tips,help.

hello .been a while since I was here but , do to a nice flooded basement, the studio build has begun. looking for any advise and or help in the hvac design in a basement studio. my main concern is noise to the rest of the house. rooms are roughly 19 x13 and 10 x14 . 8 ft ceilings . I have done the double stud walls. double 5/8 drywall each side, going double drywall on the ceiling with clips.my main trunk that feeds the house happens to be in the live room. no choice really. whats a good cost effective way to deal with the noise ? duct silencer?privacy duct? duct liner (inside the tunnel) ? trunks for send and return air are the metal type . I think Im going to go with 2 sends in the live room and a return .the duct work itself will be enclosed with double 5/8 s and green glue.basically dont want to go through all this work just to find that the sound is going through all the vents .any advise and or tips would be great. thankx in advance !!

analogasaur,

I hate to scold you on your (nearly first) post, but all this should have been planned in with the design as an integral part of the design. As Andre's signature line says, "Good studio building is 90% design and 10% construction."

Please post your design drawing or layout and I will try to help. You will need to determine the needed air flow and BTU for each room.

Cheers,
John

thankx for the reply. not quite sure how to post a sketch . here are some pics of what Im working with. hope that helps . live room size is more exactly like 17ft 6" x 13ft 3" . ceiling height once drywall is in will be 7 ft .the current ducts of the trunk now feed the upstairs of the house. this was really the only area I could do anything with in the basement. hope this helps . if not, I will figure out a way to post a sketch. thankx

Without more info, all i can tell u is that u must box the hvac with similar construction as your isolation walls. Take care not to create a triple leaf.

John

That sounds like a good plan. I don't think you need Green Glue there...

btw, I can't see any wall detail in the drawing. It is usually best to directly attach the files here because the hosting sight won't let me download it so I can zoom in...

Cheers,
John

Nice flooded basement ???

What preventive measures , if any, were done to prevent it from becoming a "really nice flooded basement"

Did you move a flood plain?

-rich

just quickly, it may have been a water heater or pipe or something repairable.... but, my brother in law has a house on a piece of property that is located next to a river. It floods every 5 to 8 years.... just so happened though that it flooded last year and again this year........ouch. Anyway, the reason I bring it up is that his electric panel is in the basement. The basement filled completely with water so that there was 4 inches of water on the first floor. The panel was completely submerged.... no shorts, no explosions, luckily no injuries. Sump pump stayed on pumping water the whole time (although it could not pump enough to keep a river out).

* Get the place really cold.
* Turn the air off while recording, back on when you're on a break or done.

(Should last for several hours. Works here in Florida....)

well, first off I learned that now is a great time to add a back up for the sump pump. for whatever reason it decided not to work for one day only. off course that day I did not go in the basement .figure 4 inchs of water was bad but hey, could have been 4 feet.

now comes the time to figure out the hvac . duct liner worth it ? lots of work involved. would consider sound baffle but unsure how to go about that in the system . duct silencers?

plan is to use existing hvac system form the house. heat/ac . both needed in michigan . trunk runs along basement all ready so Ill be running branchs off of that. couple 90 degree turns to help noise and perhaps some run of flex duct to further help on noise. only want to do this once.

Is the existing unit sized for the additional load?

I can't, but others here can advise you on treating ducks...quack,quack.

I'd call an hvac guy in. Both for ducting and sizeing of unit and splitting for zones. Maybe he/she has a studio under their belt.

Just wanted to add. I think that the AC is a bit more than cuttting wholes in existing ducts and feeding a room, you really should consult with someone who knows what their doing. Also, a post was up a month or two back with someone wanting to just duct from the existing AC. Size and acoustics aside, someone posted a response that, what if you needed heat in the house, but you needed to cool down the studio at the same time (bodies and equipment). Something else to think about.

YEP, true . would like to get an hvac expert out to look a duct work. basement had duct work when I moved in .finished basement less any ceiling. never had an issue with heat and or cooling. however, the new wall added leaves the live room with no vents.

update !

well, its been a month of construction and waiting . so, heres what I did.
went with baffle box's for live room .one for the feed and one for return air . found that this would be the most cost effective labor and materials .walls are up,ceiling is up , box goes in next .will post some pics .YEA !!!
