Acoustic Resonators

Anyone have an experience with these? I was recommended to check them out for a small post-production room I'm building instead of some diffusion on the rear wall.

Several searches have led to Acoustic Systems. I've never heard of them or heard their affect, but so far found some good articles. I'm a little leery of the voodoo surrounding these though.

Thanks,
Jesse

If you’re referring to pressure based absorbers, there’s no voodoo, strictly science. If however, you are referring to this stuff:

it’s the complete opposite! Whatever people think they do, they cannot do anything useful and any testimonials that states the opposite simply proves the power of the placebo effect.

Hyphen8Sound,

You have the right man for the job on this thread... Jens can help you with any pressure based absorber you may need.

What are the dimensions of your room? - If your rear wall is closer than 3 meters or 10 feet, I would recommend a PRD or absorption only. - You can use reflective material behind the speakers to create the effect of having ambiance in the room, if it is small & extensively trapped - similar to the NE approach.

Cheers,
John

Hey guys,

Thanks for the info. So this turned out to be a miscommunication of some sort. This guy told me to check out acoustic resonators and those weird bowls that Jens posted were the only thing I could find on research... baffling. He MUST have been referring to pressure-based absorption... that or he's a complete kook.

John, my room is pretty tight. about 10' wide by 12' long. The ceilings are pretty high, 10-12' with some duct work in place. I plan on treating most of the room with Owen's-Corning-style panels, but would love any other input. Seems the room would be too small for some diffusion on the back wall.

Thanks,
Jesse

PS - this room will be mainly for 2.1 post mixing and the occasional VO session.

Jesse,

Get REW and test your room. You should be able to see what you need then. I would still recommend good trapping and you can use slats or wood panels (reflective) in front of you behind the speakers to help with the feel.

Cheers,
John

tell you what... get jens to design it... he is the house expert on getting even response across the spectrum (most difficult in the LF region) in tiny rooms such as yours. Then put up your construction process in great detail in the 'photo diaries...' section of this forum, so that we can get in on jens' secrets... everybody wins

BTW checked out the 'Acoustic Art System'. The audiophile world is a truly bizarre place

There's no secrets, it's about attention to all (problematic) modes and the use of pressure based absorbers to deal with them thus minimising porous only absorption to the reflection points keeping the energy otherwise lost in small rooms due to the excessive use of porous absorbers in an attempt to combat modes.

Jesse:

If the room is too short to provide a sufficient ISD-gap you could try this approach:
11m2 control room? Placement of acoustic elements

And adding to what John said:
Problem Room
