Thread Starter | My mixing room is oblong! Need treatment suggestions
I just bought a home with a small guest house attached with a living room and bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, etc.. I'm thinking of turning bedroom into control room and living room into live room. The ceilings are angled and gradually get higher as you get towards the center of the room, almost like a ski cabin. At the corners of the room I would estimate the height is 12 feet or so and by the center of the room its more like 18 or 20. Also, the living room forays into the kitchen, and I want to block this area off for sound purposes, but the ceilings are very high at this point, so would I really be absorbing? I know this is all probably a little hard to imagine without pictures, but is this type of room very hard to treat or not? It is defnitely not a round rectangular situation or easy to diagnose. |

Yes, we need more information. Every room has it's own special set of variables. Please post a rough sketch with 3D dimensions. Tell us more about your space and how you want to use it (personal or pro), noise factors (nieghbors, traffic, etc). Do you need isolation and how much? ![]() Cheers, John |

Hi John, Thanks for getting back. I was figuring I would need a little more info. I will post some sketches or pictures soon. As far as isolation and treatment goes, I'm trying to do as little as possilbe regarding the structure of the house, and get treatment that I can bring to another location if need be. Neighbor, traffic, situation not really an issue, sometimes in a flight path. I'm looking to do a personal studio with pro applications. I need absorbtion for drums, preferrably moving standing ones, and for the rest I'm open to suggestions. I will post more info on the room soon to help give you a better idea. Thanks for getting back! |

| putting it bluntly, this is impossible. You can put stand mount panels around drums, and it will slightly attenuate bleed into say a dynamic mic on a guitar cab, but this is more a function of gain staging of a dynamic on a loud source more than anything. To truly isolate, especially something as loud as a drum kit, it will be anything but portable/affordable.

Ok Ok... not total isolation, sorry. Justin Beiber's not coming over anytime soon. I just meant some sort of absorbtion that is taller and on wheels, something to put around drums if need be. This would by no means be isolation, there would of course still be some bleed. Thanks for clearing that up though, the two terms are quite different and I made a mistake. I changed the wording in my post to elimate further confusion. Thanks
