Thread Starter | Concrete Wall Soundproof
Hey guys, This is a quick question. Im currently rebuliding my house and theres a seperate room attached to the house. The dimensions are 10(w)x11(L)x14(h). All walls are approximately 1 foot thick concrete. I will be playing drums here. QUESTION: 1) is it enough to soundproof sound so that neighbour and attached house can here any sound? 2) Will I NEED quietrock drywall/roxul insulation or will it be overkill. I understand theres db involved and drums are around 110db but i dont know how much the concrete walls will block. Thanks |

Hi, I have no experience in measuring the spl transfer through concrete, so don't rely on my advice as fact. That being said, I am a contractor and a drummer, and I can't imagine that you would be able to hear drums through 1 foot of concrete unless maybe you put your ear up to it. The ceiling and roof, however, and windows or ventilation are your weak points to focus on. Also dampening the echo inside with standard acoustic treatments should cut down on the overall amount of noise inside, thus cutting down on the amount of noise that could escape. If it was me, I would frame walls and a drop ceiling and concentrate my efforts on isolating the ceiling... Good luck! |

Are you serious? 12 inches thick all the way around? What about the ceiling? concrete too? The weak points are probably the door and ceiling. The sound transmission loss of these need to be assessed. You can do some simple tests to find out how you are doing. Play your drums inside and have someone outside measure with an SPL meter. Use C weighting. FYI; 12" poured concrete wall will have an approximate STC60. This does NOT include flanking paths or impact transmission. ![]() Cheers, John |
