Thread Starter | DIY Acoustic treatment for my Homestudio, best treatment for "good" drum sound? (Vid)
Hi, what is the best treatment for a "good" drum sound? I have a room for my own in a basement which I use as a drumroom. I would like to treat the room acousticly to achive 1. good mixing conditions and 2. good acoustics for drums! I can´t afford acoustic treatment products so all would be DIY. On the GIK and Realtraps website I found lots of information about treating the room for great mixing conditions, but I can´t find anything on the internet that gives information about when a drum sounds good in a room. My aim is the create a Room where I can play drums with great sound, practise with my band, record and mix Audio! First off all I have to say that I´m 17 years old and trough the language barrier its not so easy for me to understand this topic and I´m sorry for the mistakes in my writing. There are great articles in English (and no good in German) on the Internet but its a problem for me to implement them into my situation. The room is 3.5m x 5.5m x 2,3m All walls made of Stone, carpet (underneath tiling) ![]() I noticed that when I´m wearing earmuffles that the drum sounds "warmer" ,"fatter". It just sounds way better tough maybe a bit dead. As in the earmuffles is ~1cm thick foam, my conclusion would be to build absorbers with this thickness and attach them on the walls where the drums are. Or does the frequenzeeresponse of the room has also have to be linear for a good drum sound? I already built some prototypes of Basetraps and Superchunks. (as attached) Can u guys help me with this task? I defenetly need help where to place which aborbers! I´m willing to show detailed pictures (and later videos) of my progress and finished "Studio"and DIY work. I dont have that much gear but as many say: "Gear is useless without acoustic treatment." Video just to give some orientation: ![]() YouTube - MVI 0015 best regards, Steve |

Steve, You are headed in the right direction with the corner traps, but a room that is concrete will require maximum trapping. My paper on 'Room Acoustics Design and the Frequency-Power Spectrum' found on my publications page explains the power shift... You will need substantial absorption in a room that small with calculated diffusion added, but with proper treatment the room should work quite nicely. ![]() Cheers, John |
