Before and after--what do you think?

I've spent the last year tweaking my room with the help of Jeff Hedback and some custom GIK treatments. It's documented in another thread, but here are the before and after graphs. Love to hear the opinion of the intelligentsia.

thanks,
-R

I can't repost graphs here, so here's a link.

Yes, there definitely is a reflection there. When I have the studio rewired I may try to pull the desk a few inches out from the wall and mount the ADAMs behind it.

Thanks,

Here is a very tightly windowed ETC of the Left speaker (post).

The reflection @ ~-7dB down is within .5ms and not subject to Haas effect and not problematic. Now on the larger issue, Rick and I certainly discussed reflections within first few ms. He had for years stacked his three primary monitors tightly in a group and there were issues. This graph is just to show that he's in pretty good shape as long as he's careful in monitor placement.

Excellent

Great results. Those ADAM's will work very much better vertically and may lose the reflection. The difference if quite big.

I'm gonna try them again vertically again today, on your recommendation, but in the past they've never sounded good that way.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that the writing on the back should be right side up with the heat sink fins on top. Not sure if that's "woofer up". Plus, you have to switch left and right when going from horizontal to vertical.

Does turning the tweeter really matter that much?

Victor
I looked up past threads on this and it seems that woofer-down is the most common recommendation, but since I'm not so happy with that I'll try it your way.

Thanks,
R

Okay DanDan, I tried a day of ADAMs vertical, woofer down, as recommended. No dice. I'm getting a harsh "honk" easily perceivable on one of my Norah Jones reference songs. So I flipped them over, woofers up, keeping the midrange speaker lower. It's definitely exciting something unpleasant when it's higher. Already better.

So I'll try that today, but suspect I'll be going back to horizontal.

Thanks,

-R

Up

The ADAM's were clearly designed for horizontal meter bridge or stand mounting. However the horizontal off axis response is very very much better when they are vertical. Check out the stereo spread when vertical. Observe how the tone doesn't change much when moving the head sideways. Then try horizontal. Below 150 the two woofs operate in tandem. So just one is doing the honking as you have found.
The tweeter rotation is a small extra improvement. When you settle for vertical.....

Okay, DD, I've been using them in vertical woofer-up position and have been actually liking it. Here's a little data to go with it (front left speaker). The green is vertical positioning, red is horizontal. Notice how having the tweeter a little higher moves that first reflection of the desk just a tad later (sigh). However, there are some peaks later that have been smoothed, and the overall frequency response in a critical band is somewhat smoother on average.

What do you think?
