....jeezuz kryste this thread got obfuscated.

So anyway - not for "soundproofing" purposes, can anyone say whether it is or isn't a good idea to not attach your basstraps to the wall/ceiling if you just want to 'tame' the bass in a room used for mixing?

That's what I thought! I never got around to doing tests with my two fluffy cubes in the room. But I also didn't have easy access to a tri corner for them, so I guess you'll have to wait till I set my room up again

I believe generally you want to start in corners and first reflection points. As my tests sort of show, putting them in the middle of the room doesn't do much. Also, when putting them on the wall/ceiling, put an air gap, meaning place the trap a few inches away from the wall. For example, 2'x4'x4" trap, it could straddle a corner, making a 45 degree angle, or you could put it along a wall, 4" off.

That's the simple answer I guess haha

Yes, it is a good idea to have an air gap between the trap and the wall or corner. - You get a little 'free' extension of the trapping effect.

Cheers,
John

Hi Torea,

thank you for your drawings, they explain what happened.

Although the big distance between the walls and your traps in the second example helps the bass waves to surround them ... they are relatively close to the listening position which then helps to shield lateral waves. I have used a similar setup for testing specific modes, it works to an amount.

Just to make sure I understand, they shield against stuff going across the room, but not much else?

I still think it odd that they basically shifted that null from 100Hz to 200Hz. But whatever, I doubt I'll ever want to mix with bass traps right next to me haha
