A Theater and Some 703

Two friends of mine just bought a theater ('shotgun' a little under 200 seats).

In the house itself, I've advocated panels of 703 wrapped (or at least visually covered) in non-flammable fabric: With the panels standing several inches proud of the side walls to allow back-lighting. One friend is suggesting hanging the panels from a to-be-built rail that will allow the panels to be slid to different positions in order to tune the room.

My question is, is it important for audio to anchor 703 to the solid (concrete/plaster) wall? I would think that to avoid making the audience seasick, otherwise waving panels of 703 should be anchored, but maybe it's not an issue. The 703 thickness is yet to be determined.

Any comments or suggestions?

best,

john

Rigid fiberglass absorbs whether it's anchored to the wall or hanging from strings. If this is not what you're asking, please clarify.

Thanks for the reply, Ethan.

You nailed the question perfectly.

It's not as if the room needs much in the way of sound treatment. Think of it sort of like the CSO when Daniel Barenboim took over from Georg Solti. All Barenboim could say was that he wanted the CSO to sound even more polished. Nothing wrong with polishing I suppose (as long as one avoids over-polishing, of course).

best,

john
