Noob wants to build a live-sounding room

Hey all,

I'm a semi-pro clarinetist, and I was thinking the other day about how much my practice room sucks because it's acoustically dead. Because of this, I'd really like to make my practice room more "live", but I'm unsure how I would go about doing that. My room is rather small, being about 10x15, will it be a possibility?

Thanks!!

Sorry, but it's not really possible to make a good sounding live room that small. Adding a ton of diffusors would help, but that would be pretty expensive even if you DIY.

I remember one of the chaps from GIK saying to treat the room you have not the room you don't have. I play the flute and while my (smaller than your) room was not ideal, hey, I practiced quite happily in there for many years. Thus I believe it will be possible to make your practice room more live sounding.

As your current room is dead it may be that you get advice to have more exposed hard surfaces, especially the floor and some areas on the walls, and to install some acoustic traps in order to diminish problems of notes echoing endlessly round the room (ie. to avoid the problems of room modes and other undesirable reflections).

There is far more expert advice to be had than mine so I will not attempt to give detailed advice as I am still learning. Let us know how you get on.
