Question on Percentage of surface area that needs to absorbed

I remember someone saying that for small rooms (mix/control), there was a percentage of surface area that 'generally' needs to be covered with absorption that will best help the room.
I could have sworn it was around 25%, but I can't find the page on it.

Can anyone remind me?

The amount / percentage of surface coverage depends directly on the size of the room, and after that on the intended use (CR versus live room).

Ok, lets say the room size is
16.1 x 9.2 x 8.5 (feet)
Use of room: CR

Rules of thumb

I have seen a figure of 20% in order to achieve a significant difference.
Such rules of thumb have virtually no meaning with context.

Rather than view this as a "percent surface coverage" calculation, I'd approach it like this:

* As many large corner bass traps as you can possibly fit.

* More bass trapping flat on the front and rear walls, especially near the tops and bottoms which are also corners.

* Full-range absorbers at the side-wall and ceiling loudspeaker reflection points.

I have no idea how many percent that is.

FYI, the reason why I'm asking is a friend is asking how many absorption panels he needs as he will be building them himself. I suspect his room is a typical room in a house and I sworn that there was number that helped get a person within the 'ball' park.

My room is as trapped as its going to get until I replace the ceiling tiles with the Realtraps ceiling tiles.

As far as corner traps go "As many as you can put up" is about the right number.
One thing though is set up of the mix spot is just as important as the number of treatment needed. See the following

:P

yea, I'm aware. I believe I sent him links to both GIK & Real Traps so he can get his education on.

Typical

4 Corners 8 traps
Cloud 2-4 traps
Side RFZ 4-6 traps
That would be the barest minimum.
I have the equivalent of 20 traps in a small room. 4.5x3.5x2.5M
