what do egg crates do?

This video, at 0:27

YouTube - Rupert Neve Designs Portico 5012: Milquetoast Sounds Splurges On A Quality Preamp

Are those just the things that hold eggs from the grocery store?

What's the function of those things in terms of acoustics?

I don't think it's the same as foam.

Egg cartons do nothing but create a fire hazard.

But if you ate all the eggs, you might be well-prepared for a triathlon or live to be 112 years old

Here is an excerpt from actual tests.

Think of them as mid range absorbers that particularly effect the critical vocal frequencies. Just what you do NOT need.

Bottomline: Forget egg cartons for acoustical use.

It is because of the proliferation of photos and videos like this that people get the idea that the crap on their walls actually does anything.

That's why I go on and on about not copying the work done in videos and photos. It's the blind leading the blind. Artists are unique - strange birds, some of them.. (no offense to you guys..) and they will go about to re-invent the wheel. Some refuse to do any research or check facts because they mystically believe that they might be on to some magic.

Acoustics can be done artistically but one must first follow the principles of physics that control it and define its behavior.

You can put egg crates on your wall if you want to... then again - you can crap in one hand and wish in the other and see which one gets full...

Cheers,
John

Egg cartons are great for breeding bugs that eat the cardboard.

Also, they are great for making a pyre to burn all those heretical studio designers who eschew scientific acoustics.

to quote from here:

Quote:
It all started in the early 90´s when a young Thomas Jouanjean, fed up with the acoustics of his band's small rehearsal room, started collecting egg cartons and random pieces of packaging foam – and set on a plan to dutifully glue these to the walls. As expected, not much happened from that – except an increasingly disturbing stench of egg and glue throughout the basement. Ah, the joys of being 14 years old in the pre-Internet world.
