Speaker Placement,

Hi all.
In setting up the live aspect (jamming) of my room. I originally had two PA bins and horns (JBL 4560's with JBL 2345 of Emilar high frequency horns....thanks avare for the classification!), one on each side of the room and four "home" speakers in each corner of the room.
As per SAC's instructions, I stacked, inverted, and splayed the PA bins in one corner of the room, but am not quite sure where to place the four stereo speakers. I've put them back in locations as not to get reflections back to my listening position, but I'm unclear how I should place them as to cut down on comb filtering and fighting of waves as SAC mentioned the PA speakers where doing.

Should they also be stacked, inverted and spade as the PA in the same corner, or is it expectable to position them around the room?

Thank you.
Rich

You put the stereo speakers for use in mixing on stands located several feet behind the work surface and additionally minimize any reflective surface area that will reflect the signal to the mix/listening position!

It is those early reflections that when they superpose with the direct signal cause polar lobing and manifest themselves as comb filtering in frequency response measurements.

Thanks SAC and Jens,
Just to clarify, these stereo speakers (4) I'm trying to place are not my mixing speakers. They are only for live, jamming sound reinforcement (balanced "volume") when the gents come over on weekends to "jam". I've been working on my mix speakers and work surface placement and am becoming quite pleased with it all. Hope to have a graph and pic up soon.

All mixing aside. JAM ROOM (mix and jam room are the same, one room) speaker placement. Should the (4) stereo speakers:

(1) go in the same corner as the stacked, inverted, splayed PA speakers?
(2) be placed around the room?
(3) go into storage or posted on e-bay?

Will read through link again Jens. Frequency/Time domain to consider.

Thank you.
Rich

Your reference to "4 stereo speakers" is confusing, as it makes little sense to be running live speakers in that limited space in stereo.

If there sole purpose is sound reinforcement, I would forget the additional 4 ("stereo"?) speakers and simply use the 2 stacked speakers placed in a corner for sound reinforcement. They are not only more than adequate, but you eliminate additional polar lobing and comb filtering effects.

Also, the link simply provides insight into the inverse relationship of both early and late arriving reflections and how they are manifest in frequency domain.
