crazy room dimensions bad bass problems!

Hi, i'm trying to set up a studio in my basement. I have to mix a project in the next month and I am having acoustic problems. I am using mackie hr824's mac pro digi 003 rack bla mod. My problem is that my room has weird dimensions, i have attached a picture of the floor plan. As you can see there really is no symmetrical spot to place speakers. Also there is a drop ceiling that measures 7'5 off of the ground, this is a problem because I just bought a pair of stands for my speakers and when i place them on the stands they are 3'7 from floor and 3'9 from ceiling, and i cant adjust the stands. I tried setting up in the northern cube shaped alcove facing north but I am having bass problems, lots of nulls between 60-125hz, and especially at 70-90hz (depends on if i move them a bit it will change from 70-80 to 80-90). I have been researching bass traps and am willing to spend the money (I could spend between 1000-1500$ IF i'm convinced that it will be well spent.) I am very frustrated and am just looking for some advice. note: I have a dbx flat response mic that ive been sending pink noise thru to take measurements. THANK YOU. -jim

Jim,

Move your mix position to face the 19' 2" wall. Centered on that wall. Start at about 7' back from that wall.

You will need to trap/treat every corner you can. Remove the ceiling tiles over and in front of the mix position & stuff the cavity above with fiberglass. (I recommend filling the entire ceiling above the ceiling tiles with fiberglass attic blanket) Replace the ceiling tiles with fabric covered rigid fiberglass panels.

This is only a start & will get you moving in the right direction. Download REW and do some measurements. Adjust from there.

Cheers,
John
