Carpet work good???Floor to celing?

Just wondering what exactly makes a room good for recording? and is it the same quality's that make a room good for recording drums and vocals...?

I know nothing about acoustics, but recently a relative had new carpet put in so I have access to floor to celing carpet for a room if that helps but just wondering really what the best way to at home set up a room for recording drums, vocals, and mixing and mastering on studio monitors...

Also a quick run down on acoustics and what makes it good for recording, and what actually needs to be done, or what to look for when renting out studio rooms that say they have been set up to record in....

"I know nothing about acoustics,"

Time to start reading.

"but recently a relative had new carpet put in so I have access to floor to ceiling carpet for a room if that helps"

In that case, time to start reading.

"what the best way to at home set up a room for recording drums, vocals, and mixing and mastering on studio monitors..."

Again, time to start reading

"Also a quick run down on acoustics and what makes it good for recording, and what actually needs to be done, or what to look for when renting out studio rooms that say they have been set up to record in..."

Would you like fries with that?

Strummer, there's a bazillion posts that will cover these topics.. Put alittle time into reading around.

OK. And...quick, an intervention is required!

Start by reading the stickies and the articles at Realtraps and GIK. They will give you basic overview of some of the basic concerns. And then KEEP reading. There is more that is important to understand!

Forget the carpet except for perhaps the floor as it will help keep the drums from slipping.

Carpet does little except kill the high frequencies that we do not worry about.

From my Acoustic Basics article:

Hi Strummer, I am a fellow beginner, one who has just spent the last few months reading and studying many articles and forums on the web - so many my brain has gone into meltdown! Once you start reading it will soon become clear how many people have done some homework (ie. are serious enough about what they want to do) and how many have no budget, no time, no commitment, have studied little but still want a top-sounding room or studio. The replies from the experienced and professionals on these forums are often of a similar quality to the amount of study and preparation you have done; they're not stupid!

Once you start reading you will also realize that mentioning carpet is like saying you can't afford a real guitar but you have some MDF and some rubber bands and hope that you can get a good sound out of that.

Can I recommend Rod Gervais' excellent book Home Recording Studio: Build It Like the Pros?

All the best with your room and your recordings.
