Mitch Lowen's Acoustic Treatment Progress -> PICTURES!!!

As some, and now all :D, of y'all know.. I'm focused on the acoustic treatment of my room. Here's some pics of the progress!!!

T H E P I C T U R E S

1. Table, mixer, monitors on speakerstands symetrical in front of curtain
2. Table etc. + curtain and part of sidewall
3. Dynaudio BM5's on SELF-BUILT speakerstands (MDF filled with sand)
4. Distance between back monitors and curtain
5. Sidewall LEFT of mixing position
6. Sidewall RIGHT of mixing position
7. Top corner above LEFT sidewall door
8. Board + 4 feet for gear (synths + outboard + PC monitor)
9. Board + acoustic foam for sidewall plates. This + 3cm isolation material in between = bass traps for backwall.

Wanna get y'all feedback, comments and even questions :P Could y'all be so cool to use the number in front of the pic when talking about a pic aight!?

Next up:

* 300 cm long 100 cm high 6 cm thick plates (3cm board + 3cm acoustic foam) on both sidewalls.

* Bass traps consisting of board (see pics for material), isolation material and acoustic foam. Size of traps: 50 cm long 200 cm high 9cm thick plates!! I'ma hang these on the side of the backwall (240 high wall)

* In between the bass traps above the couch 100 cm long x 50 cm high
6 cm thick plates (3cm board + 3cm acoustic foam) @ monitor height.

THANX guys!

I've spent hours upon hours trying to get straight answers about bass traps on several forums. Getting proper information on a forum is not as easy as I thought.
Getting answers to a basic question like: what do you use to attach acoustic foam to a wall.. is hard it seems. Why this is - is way beyond me.

For the basstraps I want to make the Ethan-consruction:

wooden panels
fiberglass
cloth to cover the front.

I can NOT put corner traps on the right of the backwall.. since there's a DOOR there.

Questions - and please answer these with an answer we'd all understand:

1. Does it have a positive effect to place the construction (9 feet tall 1,5 foot wide) directly on the backwall. (Like acoustic foam on the sidewall)? It's hard to hang something from the wall @ the rightside.. because of the door.

2. Is acoustic material on the SIDEWALLS (300 cm long 100cm high 1inch thick) enough? Or do I have to ADD a material between wall and foam. If yes. What material?

3) How do I hang all these things to a wall with paper wallpaper? Kit or doublesided tape?

Thanx!!

Bass traps are ESSENTIAL I understand that. I want to work on the room all day tomorrow. Return all the unusefull material, buy good material and start building.

Good work so far.
You'll need a rug.
You're working on bass traps, so that's good.
I'd bring the speakers out a little more and separate them a little more (maybe getting them off you're mixing table). (I think you're sitting too close to them.) I'd put some foam under the speakers also (easy and cheap).
Then you've gotta get curtains that are not going to sap your mojo.

you can use spray adhesive to hang acoustic foam on your walls. maybe buy some from staples or something? you can easily find some online.

you may also use two sided tape. may not be your best bet, but it works!

Hey Mitch,

Tape it, glue it, screw it, velcro, you name it. You choose it. But just stick it up for Christ sake!

I think people really want to help you but asking questions like that, when you can find the answer VERY easily by yourself... (Auralex), well, it's a waste of others time. Know what I mean?

You'll get there in the end.

Maybe you should stop worrying about getting it all done tomorrow and spend another week or so just researching?

Believe me, I've been RIGHT where your at and it's kind of a pain but it's also a real learning experience too.

Good luck, ok?

R.

Hi Mitch

for you. I'm also planning acoustical treatment this year.

Just one hint: If you invest so much money and time, why don't you change the curtains too. It looks like mine ... shitty

Tell us how it sounds when it's done.

you can put corner traps by your door

I just finished building and installing DIY panels out of 703 fiberglass and fabric. The door to my room is in the corner just like yours. I have two 4" thick 2' wide 4' tall panels right in the corner. They're just not permanently hung there. It's a hassle, but I essentially just move them into place once I enter the room and close the door. One stacked on top of the other. I have more panels that are hung on the back wall that I use to wedge them into place so they don't fall over. I can even open the door wide enough to get out without taking them down. The panels just slide along the door until they hit the doorknob. The back wall panels keep them from falling over most of the time when I do this too.

I can't remember the exact name, but there's this double sided white foam tape, made my Scotch, that works great. You can get it any any K-mart, Target, etc. You really gotta press down hard, but once they're up, they stay up. Also, if you have to take them down, it's no problem - they come off easily without any residue and won't rip your wall apart.

Here is a trick that might help

Mitch,

We all know that reflections in a mixing room can cause some weird nuances to your mix

Here is a little trick that might save you a little money

1. Need two people (you and one other person)
2. Need a mirror 2' x 2'
3. Sit at your mix position (Use a swivel chair)
4. Have your buddy (or significant other to get her involved) take and move/slide the mirror along every aspect of the walls and ceiling. Wherever you can see a reflection of one of your monitors in the mirror, that is where you will need treatment to kill off 1st order reflections (mark that area with a "stickie dot").
5. Each area will not need a lot of treatment, maybe 2' x 2'

Try starting here, and you could save some moolah. A lot of people will go out and buy enough acoustic foam to insulate their house with, then find out it is too dead in the room. This is NOT to address bass treatment, though.

PS: The curtains are going to help a lot on the higher end.

Doc
