Roll Roofing

I was searching on google and here in gearslutz for alternatives to green glue. I have read on here from some users that they use roll roofing that you would find at home depot or lowes, I also found a website that says it is the closest thing to MLV.

I have read on here that people say use it or that they use it, but never said how it works, anyone have an ideas if roll roofing actually will act as a damper like green glue ??

Should I just not waste my time and go with green glue cuz it is proven to work and gets great reviews on here?

I appreciate everyone's help.

Yes, Roll roofing is heavy and can add damping...

But it doesn't even come close to being a CLDM. There is no comparison to Green glue. I think that someone is grasping at straws to support their 'wishing' for something cheaper. Technology comes with a price. That's just the facts.

Cheers,
John

We use heavy Roofing (in constraint layer) mainly for damping and added mass. From ~6kg to ~10kg/m² usually, depending on brands. So to lower the resonance frequency of a 'light' wall and make that resonance "shorter in time".

It's not like green glue. Not really the same principle, not the same use.

Another type of damping / anti drumming product which is "glue like" is http://www.noisecontrol.nl/en/vibradamp.html but that is more used in heavy industrial projects.

Depending on wall construction, green glue can help or not. It's to be decided per wall / studio structure, project needs and budget.

Here we never use Green Glue but I know it's used a lot by other designers.

Best figure out what your specific needs are before investing in anything expensive that you may well not need.

++1!

I always ask this question, and rarely do I get an answer; "How much STL do you need?"

Determine the STL requirements and the applicable frequencies or range and we can give you some good suggestions. The isolation approach can differ widely depending on many factors.

Cheers,
John
