10ft10 x 5ft7 drum / vocal room?

I'm thikning of using a room measuring 3.3metres x 1.7metres for drums and vocals. (ceiling height 2.4metres)

I'm aware that I'd need to deaden this room entirely to avoid it sounding like a small room, but past that point, has anyone made a space this small work before?

how big is your drum set? i think my extended TD-3 kit is deeper and wider than 1.7m, not sure you could reasonably get an acoustic kit in there... you might get away using that for a vox booth or amp booth.

I had a drum room of about 11'x8' which didn't sound too bad after I treated the hell out of it. I had a 6 piece kit in there which took up about 7'x8' of area. If you want to hear how it sounded:

at LAST the room is almost clear of office content.

One thought now is whether to leave the floor as laminate flooring (hard reflective surface), or to carpet it with a thick underlay.

I intend to cut the "small room" effect as much as possible, but I've read things about hard floors too, so I'm a bit confused now too.

Also, should I fit some bass traps, considering the size of the room?

Some photos of the room are attached.

alasdair,

Yes. You will definitely need to trap the crap out of that small room. You must eliminate the reflections from the walls and ceiling.

Cheers,
John

Thanks John!

Should I carpet the floor or leave it reflective and hard?

One idea is to trap the upper corners around the room. That will give you low end absorption and save a lot of room your drums.

That sounds like a great idea!
