Tom, haha. Thanks. Maybe you misunderstood Bryan, but dimensions should never be multiples of each other. This is not a matter of personal opinion but of physics. I respect Bryan as knowledgeable in this field and think that he may have simply meant 'about' twice as long as it is wide. Grab a copy of my Room Mode calculator here (SAE for you) and go to the ideal rooms tab. There you will see some of the better ratios sized into actual rooms. You will need to plug these dimensions into the calculator to check if they would work mathematically. Usually ratios will get you close and then you'll need to tweak the dims until everything is optimum. Yes, the room choice is yours. I will try my best to be objective in my recommendations to you as always. And, as always, the choice is yours which, once made, I will support and help fine tune as much as possible. ![]() Cheers, John |

We are in the process of trying to figure out if moving back the wall that separates the furnace and the mix room. However, there is a metal pole that extends from the floor to the ceiling about a foot in. So, I built a wall about a foot away from the stairs and moved the wall back 2 feet. The dimensions are now 10x16 or so. We have also decided to drywall the live room ceiling. So, two layers of drywall with green glue in between each layer. That is also the plan for the walls, and the new wall that is being built with the door in it. We are also going to keep the drop ceiling in the mix room, which well will make things far cheaper. There is just way too much crap up in the drop ceiling to dry wall. I really am unsure if we can even move that wall back. |

So here we go again. We ended up financing the whole thing through our mortgage. We were able to pay for both rooms being done. Here are some pictures of stage one. The biggest changes we made were: 1) putting up two walls and making a landing at the bottom of the stairs 2) moving one of the walls back in the mix room. Check out the pictures below. These are the tear down pictures. You can see how the wall that was there is no longer there and the ceiling tiles in the drum room are gone! |

Here is the next step. Framing. The contractor framed the new wall that was supposed to be moved back (we decided it would be cheaper than moving the wall back). He also framed the two new walls. 1) Separates the drum room and the stairwell 2) Separates the new hallway (stairwell landing area) to the new mix room. |

Currently this week we are working on drywall. Two sheets of 5/8" drywall in the drum room on the ceiling and the surrounding walls. In between is Green Glue which was recommended by GIK acoustician Bryan Pape. I didn't include the pictures of the insulation in the drum room and the 2 x 4" hat channels we put on the engineered floor joysts. Here are some pictures pre mudding and taping. Will post some new pictures next week! |

Now I need to figure out how to run my cabling. I have a 100 foot snake and I was thinking of running it in between the two rooms until we can figure out things. Ideas: +Cabling conduit box +Wall plate +Under the door (ghetto style) +????? This would have been good to figure out during construction but my contractor only had 30 days to build everything. Plus, he had no freaking idea what to do, other than what I told him to do. |
