new desk: sterling modular : acoustics

so... will likely be getting a new Sterling Modular desk for my new room.... the model that works the best for me is the Plan D.. because it has room for dual computer monitors and a bit of desk space for a DAW controller (mackie control in my case).

my question is.. as nicely as the sterlings are designed, does it have too big of an acoustic footprint?

would i be better off with a smaller Plan A desk and then another rack to my side for additional equipment and the control surfaces? or would that side rack just cause another set of acoustic problems?

hopefully you understand what i'm getting at..

i want to have the best desk for what i need, but want to make sure it's not disrupting the acoustics too much...

OR.. should i just get the Plan D and then design the treatment around the effects that it has on the room?

thanks..

I like the Plan D. I use it in several of my drawings... How big is your room?

You will need to have the speakers positioned well behind the desk -- It's all in the alignment to prevent early reflections off the desk. -- But, the bigger the desk.. the bigger the room needs to be.

Cheers,
John

Oh yeah. I remember.

Yes, that ought to work. Position is everything.

$3k??

Have you explored the possibility of a carpenter building something EXACTLY as you want it? That's what my father had done and it didn't cost $3k...

My carpenter built this for me for less that £400 GBP, including all the material costs, rack rails etc...

Ignore the layout/setup, it was all a work in progress

Ps 1000 gs posts, congrats :D

If you have money to burn maybe. All those features are possible in a DIY/carpenter build with relative ease

I have neither an abundance of time nor money, hence I use a local skilled carpenter thumbsup

i built my own desk because i could make it as acoustically small as possible.

the sterlings are great, but a bit "chunky".

so, building a custom one lets you do stuff like that.

i have a 3D pdf of my desk somewhere (its like a sterling plan A)

i'll see if i can find it.

After someone can adequately describe how they will make the megalith and amazingly testament sure to impress one's family and friends acoustically transparent, then one can discuss which carpenter they will employ.

Until then they would do well to focus on the real purpose of the room by making its acoustic signature as small as possible, focusing only on what is absolutely necessary, and allocate space for hors d'oeuvres, drinks and other assorted condiments outside the room.

Now I'd best run before I am shot for delivering the good news!

The reality is though that whilst acoustics should always be the priority, there are often other considerations that imply compromises, one of which is ergonomics (and in my case trying to do as little further harm to an already screwed back)
