Mixing room - pics + spectrum [need advice]

Hi,

I don't have a lot of resources to work with so I just kinda have my home studio thing going on. My mixing room is my bedroom and the live room is the den! haha.

So I want to make things work as well as possible. The only thing I've done acoustically is putting up some auralex foam squares in both rooms. They are just placed arbitrarily around the room lol.

So I measured the frequency response with REW. I know it's not the best but how bad is this? What would you recommend for me to do? Thanks!

Pics & chart attached.

I appreciate any advice you guys can give me!

I'm sure you can good results in that room with proper bass trapping and speaker placement. Here's a good start, and hopefully it's not too much to read:

That TV monitor looks crazy!

It's like you where watching TV one day from your couch and thought, hey if I shove a desk up against the wall and stick my monitors either side, I got a mix rig

Doesn't your neck get tired moving side to side your pretty close for a screen that big, I have thought of going for a bigger monitor too, but youv'e gone way big - looks fun though.

Hehe people always wonder about the screen.

Actually, to be honest, it is phenomenal. It is 100% amazing with no pitfalls in my opinion. I used to have a 42" screen and I upgraded to a 47" because I loved it so much. When sitting down, it takes up just the right amount of my field of view and it is specifically set up so that my eye level is exactly in the middle of the screen. I use it to play video games on also, and it gives me a major advantage. Everything is life size in the games. For example in shooting games where you're running around with a gun from first person view, the guy's hand holding the gun is the exact same size as my hand, hahaha. Plus my bed is a few feet behind my chair so I can watch TV and movies from there too.

P.S. Ethan I read all those links and I loved your video "ALL ABOUT DIFFUSION." I hear about you a lot on gearslutz posts so I couldn't believe it when you responded to my thread. Now I just have to win the lottery so I can make my room the ultimate home mixing room :P hahaha.

you need at least 16 auralex bass traps in all corners

on top of that your room is loosing high frequencies, you need to put more

auralex foam on the wall, make sure foam covers at least 50% of the area

on each wall

I know you get what you pay for but do you think these could achieve similar results as the auralex bass traps?
The Foam Factory, Acoustic Foam, Sound proofing Foam, Bass Absorbers, Corner Blocks,

The NRC ratings are right here

I purchased foam from these guys before. It's definitely not as dense as auralex or as precisely cut, but it is about 1/3rd the price.

Thanks for the help guys!

So 8 auralex bass traps would do a better job than 16 generic ones?

First of all, the generic ones are not what they claim to be. If you do a search on that particular knock-off company you'll find all the evidence you need.

Secondly, while foam is a good solution for high mids and high frequencies, it's not going to sovle low frequency problems. Corner filling bass traps or panel-style straddling traps at leat 4" thick, made from mineral wool or rigid fiberglass are the ticket there. If you don't want to buy them you can easily make them.

To the OP: Ethan's advice is solid. Read all of that, apply it and you'll be good.

Thanks man. I definitely want to get some fiberglass bass traps going on. I just don't see how they sell foam everything like it's the total solution lol. Thanks to Ethan too, I learned a tremendous amount from that site!
