Measurement software

What audio measurement software do you use for checking the freq behaviour of a room ? I'm about to shoot some pink noise in my tracking room and measure in different spots to see what kind of additional treatment the room needs.

All and any tips regarding this is appreciated since I have never done it before.

spectrafoo is useful.
My chops are better on pc based Smaart now.

You may want to contact some local live sound contractors and hire someone who knows the software to come check your room out.

It's easy to get wrong data form FFT systems like foo or smaart if the settings are incorrect. Better to have a pro do it.

Plus they are expensive software.

A rta may help you, but there is no time based analyisis like in FFT systems like FOO.
Transfer function is a real eye opener.

I use ETF from www.acoustisoft.com, but it works on PCs only. Even though I measure rooms all the time as part of my business, I can tell you that you don't really need to measure anything. For example, suppose you measure a dozen or more peak and null frequencies. And suppose further you have a sophisticated tool that can also measure modal ringing. So what would you do with that data? More to the point, all smallish rooms need the same treatment: Broadband absorption that works well to as low a frequency as possible. The key to treating pretty much any small room can be summarized as follows:

* Broadband (not tuned) bass traps in as many corners as you can manage, including the wall-ceiling corners.

* Mid/high frequency absorption at the first reflection points on the side walls and ceiling.

* Some additional amount of mid/high absorption on any large areas of bare parallel surfaces, such as opposing walls or the ceiling if the floor is reflective.

There are a number of articles on my company's web site that explain this in great depth. There's also my Acoustics FAQ:

Ethan,

I'm not about to argue your point or experience concerning frequency measurement but isn't it useful to use measurement software for speaker placement and time alignment? It would be a shame to get the room treated all nice and still have the direct signal arriving out of phase.

Measuring different spots is ok but stick with the mix position. There really is no way to make all parts of your room flat and really if you are within 10db at the mix position you have done a great job..
Ethan pretty much told you what to do, but I would still shoot the room so you have some gage to go from.

Seems like their web site for the software is not working. You have any link where can I download the software?
THANKS,
Mozart

Jake,

Sure. I am not arguing against measuring and knowing as much as possible! And measuring is indeed the best way to know when your speakers are in the most favorable location. But a lot of people believe they need to measure in order to know what sort of bass traps they need, and that's what I was addressing.

Also, time arrival and phase issues do not need to be measured separately from frequency response. Phase shift per se is not damaging. Only the affect it has on frequency response when a direct sound combines with reflections.

From the RealTraps articles ; I have this ;

If you clap your hands in a room that has large bare parallel surfaces, you can hear the pitched "" sound that is characteristic of flutter echo.

Bump for this.

I'm having trouble geting Room EQ Wizard to work on my Mac.
I'm not on 10.5, so I can't use Fuzzmeasure.

The only thing I can see to do is record some pink noise and look at the result on a spectral analyzer.

Thanks,
Seamus

FuzzMeasure

Mac - FuzzMeasure.
Chris will make an earlier Tiger version of FuzzMeasure available if you ask him.
There is a sticky at the top of this forum which probably answers most questions on this topic.
