Just got a condo, able to build a vocal booth, live room, control room, any help?

Hey Slutz!!! so I recently purchased a 2 bedroom condo in which I am going to work into a studio over summer.

Currently the dimensions are 2 15x14 rooms that are on the second floor, that both have awesome, deep, closets for a vocal booth(s). I have the whole 3 story unit (Basement is just a garage currently) so noise is not a problem.

Here is a makeshift microsoft paint view of what it looks like:

I was wondering, how much it costs to make a heavy set door with a window on it for the vocal booth, how much acoustic treatment (including for the vocal booth) I will need, as well as what else I will need to get this into a decently set acousticly treated studio.

Any help would be great!

Thanks!
Ev

You say 'condo', do you have neighbours stuck to you on the sides ?

Yes. But they are college kids (the whole neighborhood is). So it isn't a problem. (Also, the place on one side is up for sale so no one is living there, and i doubt it will sell for a while)

I don't think I would do a vocal booth as they never sound all that great. Small tiny rooms like that have the "bowing" sound that no amount of treatment can generally get rid of. I would just treat the piss out of your room and record and mix in it. Anyway you can do a better layout of the room or rooms you want to treat? I am having a hard time rapping my head around what you have.

BTW you bought this place?? Your like 19 are you not??? Damn I thought I was young when I bought my first house at 24. NICE!!!!!!thumbsup

Ha well, I didn't buy it...lets just say it was a present.

Well, either way, I just want a live room for actually recording, and a room to mix in. I know they are both REALLY small...but I kinda have to deal.

Should I practically line the walls with acoustic treatment?

What about those styrofoam things taht kinda look like a buncha rectangles at different lengths? Could I makeshift that on all the walls?

Do I need to treat the live room AND the mixing room?

Also, the closet for a vocal booth is not a good idea?

First thing I would do is read for a few HOURS in this area of GS to get a understanding of how acoustics work. Also see this following area of my website which will give you some in site on acoustics.
GIK Acoustics presents Acoustics Primer: Some Basics on Acoustics.
Basically for your control room you want to use rigid fiberglass or mineral wall. See the following as a guide for set up.

I actually lied....the closets are 5 x 5 squares...they are pretty much small rooms.

Should I make them into isolation room?

and How would I do that?

I am also putting a windowed door on one of them.

Soo many questions....ugh
