How am I going to do this?

Hi,

My studio is also me (and my wifes) bedroom.

She isnt going to be a happy teddy if I start hanging things from ceilings etc however I have been given permission to stick acoustic foam up as long as its consistent and will cover the entire walls.

I was thinking of this.
Auralex 2 inch Sonomatt-48 - Charcoal | Dolphin Music

If I cover my entire 10ft by 12 ft rooms walls as well as relevant bass trapping will this be ok? Or would it be a complete waste of money.

I have done my research but have zero experience of this.

with out proper bass trapping (mineral wool and or rigid fiberglass) all the high end will be absorbed but the lows will be swimming in the room. It will sound pretty bad, needless to say.
Is the wife against fabric covered panels? Would look much nicer I would think.

Ill be bass trapping also mate as said.

There is no where to hang reflection point stuff on the walls as one of them is 70% window. WOuld mean hanging it from the ceiling along with hanging ceiling reflection point etc etc. Would end up looking like a Gerry Anderson show.

I think my orders are as long as its consistent.

So, would the foam I mentioned above sort the highs and mids out at least?

I would put them on stands. As far a that foam I did not see any lab reports so not sure how well it will work on the mids.

hmmmm, not sure where to go with this. Yeah stands would work.

For a start a door opens at one corner and theres fitted wardrobes along the back wall so again no corners. Only one corner can be trapped

If the corner is in the back of the room (behind the mix position), go ahead and trap it anyhow. If it's in the "front" of the room and you can't rearrange so that it's in the back, the skip it and put bass traps where you can.

I'll just add to what Glenn has already said: do the bass trapping first, then move on to the foam if it's necessary. I can tell you though that you don't want to be covering ENTIRE wall surfaces with foam...not a good idea. You're going to create a really unnatural-sounding listening environment by making high frequency decay times MUCH shorter than the low frequency decay times.

By the way, when you say "relevant bass trapping", how do you plan to accomplish this?

I can believe your desire to have nice studio but you may be asking a bit
much in your current circumstances. Unless the room is huge you won't be
happy and your wife won't be happy. There's no other room available ?

Yeah im realising this Paul.

No other room mate. We live in a 2 bed bungalow. My 2 year old has the other room.

Im wondering if I should just come up with ideas and pay a pro in a pro studio to mix down my arrangements?

The standard these days is so high for production. Especially in trance music as I am into. I cant do anything though if I cant hear what the hell Im doing.

Lighting

Things hanging from the ceilings can be quite interesting looking with some simple lighting. Sound Sound - Gear

@ Dan,

Comparing that studio to me and the wife's bedroom is like comparing a 42 ton truck to a mini.

I havent got anywhere near that room to hang anything from.

Feel free to email us on our website for some help there. They're not particularly heavy...not to big a pain to move in and out as you need to.
