Quick Question

Hi there, I was wondering if I somebody could point me in the right direction with this...

Ive been reading alot of stuff about acoustics, stuff on the realtraps website, etc and ive been trying to apply it to my room before I go ahead and get any treatment.

The size of the room is...

W - 3m (9.84 feet)
L - 3.5m (11.48 feet)
H - 2.34m (7.68 feet)

Theres some fairly substantial book shelves full of records that would probably change these slightly but.. i really dont know.

So yes, I was hoping that somebody could give me some advice on where to position my treatment... This is what my room is like just now...

And this is where I am thinking of putting treatment (in red)

Obviously this doesn't show the vertical aspects of things but I was thinking of trying to put some bass traps along the top corner above my listening position...

If this is complete mince then please let me know before I put alot of effort into constructing bass traps and buying acoustic treatment

Thanks alot, any advice is much appreciated.

Matt

That is a tiny room, my friend.

First I would suggest that you place your mix position so that it is equal distance from side walls. (symmetrical) This can work for you facing the corner too. It will be difficult to get your speakers out of the boundary zones on the walls without moving your position to the center of the room - be aware of SBIR.

Trap your corners as much as you can with at least 10cm thick panels (I'd go 20 or 30cm) - as much as you can afford the loss of space in the room. Remember that there are 12 corners in a room.

Cheer,
John

Thanks alot John, much appreciated.

The room is also my bedroom just now until I move out, so space is a premium.

So yea, I would have thought it would be better to not face into the corner to try and keep the room symmetrical? I don't think the space and furniture would allow for that positioning either. I've read alot of the stuff on the realtraps website which has been useful, alot of it went right over my head though so i should probably read it over a few more times. Ive tried to move my listening position 38% into the room and moved my desk to be fairly symmentrical in the room too, angled my speakers a bit better, etc.. fairly basic stuff I suspect.

What im concerned with is the effect of having such a large book shelve to the right of my listening position. It is the same height of my desk so does'nt extend the whole height of the wall but would this through off my symmetry?

The music I make is fairly bass heavy hip-hop and trip-hop, experimental type stuff if that helps any?

Thanks

Matt

Once I have treated my room, my next move is to buy some better monitors. Just now I have Samsom Resolv 65a's but... the bass is pretty muddy and I think it is time for an upgrade. I was thinking of saving up some more cash and buying some Adam's like a pair of A7's, but im not entirely sure...

The A7's would be good for a room that size.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if they would be too big or anything. First port of call is acoustics just now, then ill worry about saving up for the A7s.

I wouldn't of thought it would create too much of a problem as it's height means it is in a reflection free zone. It probably isn't ideal mind, could u not pull the bed out a bit and put the shelves under the window?

unfortunately theres a radiator under the window which cant be moved. The bed can be moved about a bit though or even put back up into a couch.

Finally got round to doing something about this, been pre-occupied with exams and whatnot.

Ill be picking up a pair of A7X's when the shop gets them in this week, purchasing them was pretty necessary since one of my current speakers broke and are pretty poor quality to begin with.

My main issue with the room is the orientation of things. With the current set-up, the back wall has a large window on it and the right hand corner of the front wall joins onto a door, making bass-trapping this corner very difficult.

If i was to reverse the layout, my listening position would be facing a window which is not centred in the wall and is close enough to the left hand corner to make bass-trapping a little difficult, not to mention making it less comfortable to watch tv.

I understand that these are the two best positions though since they are both facing into the longer length of the room.

Possibly a lost cause? Any help would be much appreciated.

Matt,

Try facing the window. It will act as a LF absorber and this will eliminate the MF and HF reflections with it being behind you. It should not cause a problem that it is not centered.

Remember that trapping horizontal corners works as well as trapping vertical corners.

Cheers,
John
