Window in mix room - face or not to face

Hi Everyone,

I have the option of having my mixing desk facing a window or having the window behind me and sitting on the other side of the room.

Treatment with bass traps etc is almost complete.

What are the advantages/disadvantages of sitting facing a window v having the window behind me.

I can make some panels to slot into the window cavities which i can stick some treatment onto if that is ultimately the best option (ie no window at all) - i like the sunlight though

Cheers

Ben

Facing the window is preferred. Your speakers face the other way, so reflections from behind you are more damaging. And without a window behind you, you'll be free to treat that wall.

Also the window will act as an absorber to some extent, especially if it is a normal home window. So facing the window would be best. Treat those front corners well - this includes the horizontal corners if you cannot treat the vertical ones.

How far is the back wall from the operator position?

I also have a similar dilemma, apart from I have no choice but to have the window behind me because the door is right next to the window. 12ft from the opposite wall.

Can someone suggest a good solution, I thought maybe a QRD above the window.

here is a rough plan on how I will start treating my new room.

Elan,

yes. just make sure that the early reflections are diffused or absorbed so that they are at least -20db compared to the direct sound. No problem.

audigy,

Have you thought about making the window the diffusor? I am doing that for one of my clients here. -- The viewing window is on the back wall so I am designing a glass diffusor for it.

I don't mean to hijack the thread either, but this is a problem that is relevant to me too (posted in a seperate thread though, but no response so far.)

Just one question:

My setup can either face a window, or the back wall of my room (see link to jpg below.)
Problem is, window is not centered.
Therefore my monitors can't be so far apart there, as they can if my setup face the opposite wall instead.

What's the best thing to do?

Best,
Henrik

Yes, it crossed my mind, I think I will make a panel that can fit over the window frame when mixing.

another Idea i had earlier was this. please someone tell me if this is a good or bad Idea

I Have attached two photos of the window with a 2" trap mounted over it, could this be an adequate temporary solution? and generally how well would it work as a bass trap aswell as dampening reflections,

there is the open weave Fabric - 2" Rockwool - Frame - 3" air gap - Glass Window.

That panel will absorb reflections nicely. Actually, that wall is probably a good component of a larger bass trap. It looks fairly thin and will pass LF. If all your walls are like this, you shouldn't worry too much about LF decay for frequencies below 100Hz.

Really? That is very interesting. I have pondered if/how this would work before. Any chance you would post something on it, and how well it works?

Nathan,

Will do. We are probably about 3-4 months from seeing that diffusor in reality as the foundation hasn't been poured, but we will definitely post the build.
