Thread Starter | Designing Studio from Ground Up: Looking for Advice Thank you for checking this out! I have read several of the posts and learned alot, however I figured I'd make a post and see if I could get even more advice. My situation: I have room on my property to build a pole barn/steal building and build a studio inside of that structure (rooms within a room kinda deal) I have finacial backing and I need to throw together an estimate. I want to do it right the first time as this is a once in a lifetime oppritunity for me! The problem I am having is figuring out how big this building needs to be. I am shooting for: *1 Live Room (I will be tracking all instruments and voices in here, including drums. I would like to achieve a very nice drum sound) *1 Control Room *A Sound Lock for the doors between the two rooms *A small clothest to hold mics, cables ect. attched to the Live Room. *1 small Bathroom *An Artist Lounge/Kitchen The studio will be computer based, no console, and I will have one 16 space rack to my side, I would also like to have the standard couch behind me. My concern is a comfortable, good sounding space. The eaves of the pole barn/steal building will be 12'. I have downloaded an excell document from user jhbrandt (thank you!) with ideal room dimensions, and it seems to be a good guide to go off of, but I am having trouble visualizing the sizes. I dont want to have a crammed space, but i dont want to go overboard and blow alot of money on a space that I dont neccessarily need. The wall between the live room and control room will be a double leaf assembly with double sheetrock on both sides. All the other walls I would like to keep normal construction as to save cost. Below is the basic idea I have put together... I just need dimensions!! If you could perhaps suggest a different layout that would be better please do! Thank you for any advice you are willing to give me! |

| Lives for gear | Get a Pro Lucky you. I strongly suggest you find a pro designer and work with an experienced studio builder. Normal building practices can ruin many acoustics designs. For more inspirations I suggest you take a look at the 'standard' designs at johnlsayers.com and SAE. DD |

Thread Starter | i am in the process of getting estimates from acoustical engineers as well, but I'm afraid my budget would not allow for that. I'm confident with the interior construction, I've done a couple studios out of existing spaces for my self and other people. They've turned out pretty nice. But obviously the advice of a pro would be much better. Can some one drop me a few names of trusted, legit designers? Hopefully around my area...? Portland, OR, USA... Some one like Russ Berger is probably out of my range. I'm no where near that big time to deserve world class. Thanks again! |

| Lives for gear | Professional Studio Designers Manners prohibits us from advertising here. I note also that the 'Acousticians' or 'Consultants' tend not to include a website signature. I would not assume an imaginary cost for studio designing. Services provided by us can range from an advisory function to full blown architectural drawings. It can range from on site supervision to an Internet or phone service. Perhaps someone geographically near you could PM you offering their services? A quick search of their postings here shows up the good guys pretty quickly. I think I have dropped enough hints now ![]() DD |
