Studio Ceiling Question

Hey everyone,

I am building a studio in Minnesota and I am in need of advice for my ceiling. The space is 950sq ft with 11 1/2 ft ceilings. Wood trusses run along the top, with vermiculite insolation in between the trusses. I could put in a sheetrock false ceiling, but I am concerned I would lose too much ceiling height. With sound absorbing below the ceiling, I could lose a foot and a half of height.

Another possibility would be a drop ceiling with acoustical tile. I could place bass blankets above the drop ceiling. This would eat up less ceiling height, but would it be as effective? Thanks for your suggestions!!

If sound isolation is currently ok you don't need to bother with the sheetrock, it would be a bad thing making the room acoustically smaller.

Instead I would build a false ceiling maybe 2 ft down from the existing structure, insulate it with 100mm rockwool (60kg/m3) or the owens corning equivalent. I would then cover this in fabric.

You would have a VERY broadband absorber which would help alot with the bass response and make the ceiling mostly invisble. You would lose visible height but not in terms of how the room sounds.

At 11ft though you have alot of space to play with, a 9ft final height would be absolutely fine. (Unless you have friends that are 10ft tall :D )

Thanks, that is good news! I already have a large amount of Owens Corning 703. Should I use the 703 across the entire false ceiling? Would that actually make the ceiling too dead?

if you have a hard floor eg wood/cement I would say it would balance out perfectly!

Also if you're not recording in the room it's better to have it a little on the dead side anyway.
