60's funk/soul room

hey guys,

I've been holding off on treating my iso room for soo long now as I haven't been sure what vibe to go for in there. And yes... i have posted on this room in the past..

One thing I really dig though is recording old funk soul etc... you know... the ol' 1 mic on a kit etc e.

anyway..
what kind treatment options would I be looking at in order to treat my smallish iso for pulling funk/soul drum sounds?

here is a picture of the room:

the back wall is 4.75m long and the left side wall is 3.3m. Its about 2.8m high with a slight tilt. The ceiling is a false ceiling made from 2 layers of rockwool batts covered in material... so its real dead Back wall is Brick.. all other walls are 16mm gyprock. their are smallish windows on the close and right walls and obviously the doors you can see in the picture.
I'm not really looking for exact science stuff at the moment.. just vibe ideas.

So what am I trying to do in order to get that sort of sound? I know acoustic design wasn't such a huge thing for those sort of days and so often thing absorbers such as carpet was used on walls etc? Also though.. I have seen a lot of helmholtz absorbers in the old hitsville usa rooms so i duno??

I was going to frame up 75mm rockwool and mount it around 100mm off the back and left walls but will that just make things too dead on too wide of a frequency range??

I suppose it does sort of need to be versatile sounding too as I will be using it to track vocals and guitars as well.

Im really interested in everyones thoughts.

thanks heaps

Matt

This is what you want.

Also, there's a few videos from inside the Daptone studios in Brooklyn on Youtube. It's not vintage, per se, but they do the 60's soul vibe better than anyone, imo.

YouTube - Daptone Records Studio Here's one where they talk a little bit about construction.

YouTube - In The House Of Soul w/ Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings Here's one where you can see a session. Watch at 2:13 and you can see the tracking room. 3 dudes in one room, 2 mics on the drums, guitar and bass amps isolated and in the phones. Looks like there's a cloud above the drums, a few porous absorbers in the upper corners and a giant curtain around the drums. There's probably some bass traps of some sort behind the curtain.

Keep it simple. Soul is about feel!

If you need a session guitarist once you get things up and running, you can pay me with round-trip airfare to Australia. It's a good deal!

Just an idea:

Maybe stuff the corners with Rockwool and 'cover' the walls with more or less flexibel absorbtion panels?
Like the ones in the picture: one side completely absorbent, the other half reflective, or you could just take 'm off all together. That should provide enough versatility...

Regards,
Phybeau

Maybe you could contact Guy Sebastian about recording his next album and save him the airfare to Memphis? Good on you for wanting to spread the gospel and propagate a '60's soul vibe like the Daptoners!

damn guy!
I was so excited to hear that he was going to the states to do a soul record with Donald Dunn etc...
AND THEN...
he just re-recorded all the same damn songs those boys have been playing for nearly 50 years!

I so thought we were gonna get some new old skool soul out of him.

ahh well.

:(

The Menahan street band is coming to town soon... VERY cool!
