HVAC help!

I'm hoping there is a HVAC experienced person here to help me. Here's my situation.

My studio is in a rented space of a large building. My rooms are in the center of the building. The building supplied us with a vent hose coming in from the ceiling that I have ducted into the two rooms with the intention of hooking up a stand alone AC unit. I hooked up an AC unit to the duct and it does not get the room cold. In fact, the room stays humid and warm unless you are sitting right in front of the AC having it blow on you.

I know an ideal situation is to get a split unit and run a refrigeration line into the room from the roof, but in this building, I do not have that option.
I'm not overly concerned about sound, because I want to be able to cool the room off and then turn the unit off for intensive listening.

I know that if the unit is too big, it won't work efficiently, but this is a small room which ideally requires a 5000+- BTU unit, and I have only seen the units sold in as low as 7000 online and only as low as 9000 locally.

So, maybe our unit is too big, maybe the exhaust cannot escape out of the ductwork, it could be a lot of things and I don't have the experience to troubleshoot this. ADVICE, PLEASE! Thanks for any help.

I should also mention that I have zero access to any windows. My ONLY venting option is the duct coming from the ceiling, and I don't know where that goes once it leaves my room. A bad situation, for sure.

You will need intake and exhaust air. A single vent won't help you.

Yes you will definetly need an exhaust. Recall that hot air actually moves tword cold air. In a sense air conditioning units are designed to 'chase hot air away'

Thanks for the responses. I appreciate any and all help.
Right, the one vent we have I am using as an exhaust for a single hose AC unit.

Tiny, is your thinking that the room is too small for the unit to efficiently pull air from, so I need a two hose unit so I can pull air from outside and spit exhaust outside. That makes a lot of sense. Unfortunately, the building is totally built out already and I imagine them giving me another line would be very difficult. As a renter of a small room in a large building, I don't have a great deal of pull for such things unfortunately.

I'm realizing that my unit is about 14000 btu's which is WAY too powerful for a small room (roughly 10x10x12 high).
Do you think that if I get a smaller unit (9000) it will do anything at all?
I hate dumping money into a problem when I don't really know the solution.

Thanks.

Remember that you have to cool the hot side of the heat pump. Normally the heat pump is outside. The portable units, however, have the hot inside and rely on the exhaust to carry the hot air out. If you can't vent the hot air effectively, it builds up in your room.

I bet the AC works fine if you open your door and pull in a little air from the rest of the building.
