Acoustically treating my hole in the wall

Hi all,

I live and work in a hole in the wall which has often meant I try to do the majority of my mixes on my Sennheiser HD650s and then reference my JBL LSR25p monitors for cross-checking what I can (I find this to be unreliable partly because of the panning imbalance in my room among other reasons).

I've attached some some photos below and want to acoustically treat it as best as I can, and for as cheaply as I can (does £400-500 budget sound ridiculous for this kind of thing?).

Could any of you kind and generous gearslutterz offer me advice on how I can treat my room so my mixes are as accurate as possible? My big concerns are how to treat the velux window area and that I won't be able to mount rockwool panels or the like everywhere because of a serious lack of space.

So you know, I tend to record next to the mattress and yes, my room's a state, I will begin to throw as much stuff out as possible!

Thanks for any pointers

Treat the peak of the ceiling with some 4" panels hung as clouds. You have lights so there will be gaps but do what you can.

Also, you'll want some 2-3" thick panels in the front half of the room on both angled surfaces.

If possible, do something 4-6" thick, maybe 4'x4' on the rear wall.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for getting back to me. I assume you mean something like this when you talk about 4" hanging clouds right?

I borrowed that image from your site The width of my ceiling where the lights are is about 10", so I'd have to get something/make something specifically that shape I guess..

Can you confirm that the panels should be layed out as in the attached images please? Also, what do you suggest I do about that velux window? Can I just cover it over with plywood when recording/mixing or something? It's my entrance in and out, so it needs to be a removable solution.

Thanks for all your help so far,

C

Thanks for the help guys.

Just wondering, I assume I need to purchase these from a specialist considering the width of the ceiling is so specific? Also, I'm assuming this will make a pretty big difference to my mixes right?

I'm in the UK, so if anyone can point me to where I can buy these things for a good price, I'd be hugely appreciative.

Thanks,

C
