Where should I put desk, monitors & acoustic foam?

Hi

Im moving my studio to a new home and would like some much needed advice.

I would like to know where you guys think I should place my desk, monitors and acoustic foam?

Here is a sketch I drew up :-

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

desk near the top of the picture, facing upwards (in the picture)

foam on the points on the wall halfway between listening position and speakers, where you would see the speakers if you put a mirror on the wall. And possilby in the same spot on the ceiling depending how high the ceiling is, assuming it is flat.

Do some reading up on bass traps and utilize those too.

I assume the door is that bit on the bottom right

I hope that helps

Yeah thats the hallway in the bottom right.

Would the windows affect the sound being behind desk/monitors?
(Im using Genelec 8040's monitors which are rear ported)

Thanks

they shouldn't be an issue. Remember most studios have glass behind the monitors, as the viewing window through to the live room

Would it be fine to put a sofa in the room and if so, where?

I'd build a drywall, seperating the hallway/patio part at the rear from the room. Then you only need to deal with the front window reflections.

Im planning on doing just that, a moveable wall filled with Rockwool rw3.

Its just I need a sofa in there, but I don't know where to put it and how it will affect the sound?

A thick, padded leather sofa makes a great midband absorber. Not very exact though. We always have our sofas on the rear wall. But you need pretty good acoustics, if you want your clients to hear well while sitting right at the back.

Thanks

I just need a sofa in the room for when I get people in the studio to sing, so that they've got somewhere to sit between recordings.

What do you reckon to a padded cotton type sofa?

Will do fine, just make sure it doesn't squeak, that'll drive you crazy.
