Thread Starter | Small Control Room Suggestions?
The room is 16.6 x 9.3 x 8 ft. Carpet on concrete for the floor, painted cinder blocks for the walls, and a drop-ceiling. Before anyone starts tearing me a new one about how this is too small, I figure anything is better than where I am now, which is with my back up against a wall and my speakers firing directly at that wall (~3ft between the speakers and the wall). I can't make huge permanent modifications to the space as there are considerations for other users, but I have been given authorization to hang carpeted fiberglass panels. I can also put bass traps in the corners, but the owners do not want foam sticking out from the walls in the middle of the room. I figured I would put my mix position facing the 9.3 ft wall, pulled out into the room a bit. This room is primarily for mixing, though vocal overdubs may be done, as well as some acoustic guitar. What can I do to make this as good as I can given the limitations listed above? Thanks. |

The drop ceiling is your friend. You can replace the ceiling tiles there with tiles that work better at low frequencies. We've had customers who did only this in their rooms and gotten very good results, though I do still recommend bass traps in the wall/wall corners and a solid RFZ.

Also, make sure you add thick insulation around the perimeter and over your mix position above the drop ceiling. That will give you a good amount of broadband bass control and catch a lot of corner area without any real mods to the room. I agree with JWL that you'll still likely need some other treatments in the visible portion of the room but the insulation above the ceiling is a good start. Bryan
