Studio Apartment- Glass Door?!

I am soon moving into a studio apartment that i will make my dedicated studio. There are two issues with this.

1. Orientation: Acoustically, I know you are supposed to position the monitors facing long ways (yellow). There is a glass door (blue) that runs goes into a patio area which also has windows (blue). Can I sit place the monitors in the red position provided i have the proper acoustic treatment? Or would it be better place them in the yellow position and put some type of heavy curtain up?

2. Will the kitchen area/hallway affect my bass? I plan on placing a smaller trap (brown) against the counter. I will also have floor to ceiling bass traps (brown) on the two corners that allow it. I have will have another smaller corner trap mounted above the frame of the glass sliding door.

Along with this, not pictured i will have a cloud trap, two first reflection side traps, and two 6 inch bass traps on wheels for gobos. I am also thinking about another trap at the center of the back of the room wherever that ends up.

Thank you for all the help. This forum has taught me so much AND helped me save alot on basstraps.

I would go with the yellow set up. You can put curtains up but you might not really need them. If you are getting strange reflections coming from the front area then I would place panels on stands behind the monitors.

In some ways it is going to help as it gives more length to the room.

Seems like a good plan to me.

Thanks Glenn! Seems like you are always lurking around trying to help.. an acoustic angel!!!

You think I should just move in first to see how it sounds? I thought a glass door would definitely need some sort of soft cloth but if you say so, GREAT!

Ok well i have been looking around and probably go the superchunk route. I have NO clue what insulation this is here in China but its cheap enough and they lady said it was for acoustics. I plan on just cutting triangle corner shelves and set them 1/3 and 2/3 up each corner and build a fabric/wood frame cover (like a speaker grill). I think i will also staple gun felt as another layer to keep out nasty particles.

I still plan on making rectangular bass traps....

One more question: Would sitting in the red position be THAT much worse? To be honest it works better from a layout standpoint. what do you think?

Yes between the 2 spots the red is not going to work as well. Could you make it work? Sure, but not as well as going the other way. I would test it both ways with the following program. Room EQ Wizard Home Page

Probably, but it depends on the room dimensions. Since you didn't provide that we can only guess. The graph below shows a very small room both ways, and it's obvious how much better the long way is.

Here is an updated image of the room drawn to scale. I have also wondered about placing the monitors in the purple position. would this cause any problems being next to a corner (that is superchunked)?

and thanks ethan (the other acoustic angel)

I'd still go with the yellow, but shifted down a bit to be centered left and right in the room.

i will be experimenting with each setup and take some tests. I have never measured a room before so i hope there isn't too much user error. I just dled the Room EQ Wizard and felt very nerdy and proud at the same time. I will experiment and hopefully you guys can help analyze the graph. What should i be measuring anyway?

The low frequency response and ringing at the listening position.

Complete!

Here is a final look at the studio. thanks for everyone's help. it makes such such a big difference. the only thing is, i can now hear the ringing on the enclosed balcony outside of the glass door and i think i do hear some ringing from the kitchen area which is all tile. i might have to use the extra insulation i have to make some more traps and put them there. but its a GIGANTIC improvement. let me me know what you slutz think

If you can afford it (and these are quite expensive) and want to treat the glass and still allow light to totally come from it you may check RPG microperforated panels. But these are expensive
