Placing my G5 in another room for isolation.,

So I'm nearly done with my little home studio. It's relatively modest, but ideal for a singer-songwriter type. My main issue is that I'm running a G5 quad core, and this baby is loud! My question is: how feasible is it to run cable into the next adjoining room (between 15-20 feet) and maintain integrity with my recording?

I know I can get the required extensions for monitor, keyboard, and firewire, so all I need to know now is whether or not it's worth it.

Thank you for reading,

Gabriel.

Lightbulb

My Dell computer is quiet enough to have right next to me, but I'm sure what you propose is worth the small cost for extension cables. The only downside is having to go to the other room to insert CDs or DVDs into the drive.

I don't record in my mix room much, but I have my rack mounted PC run into the next room too...very simple. Like Ethan said, it's just a matter of getting some longer ADAT cables (in my case), punching a hole through the adjoining wall and putting in a couple of grometted plates.

VGA cables should be fine, DVI i dont know but those are expensive anyway.
If you use USB no cable should be longer than 5 meters (16 feet?). You could get a USB-hub with it's own power supply and connect stuff from that. Even an external dvd-drive.
I also use ADAT cables ... at the speed of light ,

My computers are in a machine room about 12 meters from my console. I have 3 computer screens hooked up via 'dvi extender' that uses CAT5, and for USB I use USB extenders with its own power. Everything works right.

That would work just fine. DVI is typically good for about 25' before you start losing synch pulse; USB is good for 12' (but 15' is often fine), and if you need to go over that all you need to buy is a $15 USB extender. Pretty easy. ADAT can go for miles, of course.

I just recently relocated 2 PCs into an adjacent unfinished space above my garage last week because I was tired of the noise and I don't have the luxury of a separate vocal booth anymore in my home recording space. My P4 PC is older and the hard drives and fans make a lot of noise when running. The other Core 2 Duo PC is pretty silent, but I decided to kick that one out of the room anyway.

I simply ordered a ton of extension cables from monoprice.com and cut a hole in the wall and now my space is virtually silent.

I'll try to add some pics of the project later when I am on my laptop that contains them.

an external USB or firewire drive could even solve this problem

How is relocation possible in case of FW audio interface?
As Far as I'm aware FW is limited to 4-5 meters...

I'm thinking about building a silent casing but designing a fan controller which reacts to variable temperature could be a major hassle.

Any one know of a place that sells a DIY kit?

We use NTI and Gefen CAT5e/6 extenders for all our KVM, VGA, DVI, USB and FW connections. Good for hundreds of feet! Works perfectly! thumbsup

But extremly expenssive.
I'm going to try a firewire repeater and a usb hub for my USB midi controler or better yet, go stright into MOTU via good old midi.

I just use an external FW drive hooked up to my Mac in the other room. Easy solution here, I just drilled a hole into the wall and another one through the floor! (My Live room is just underneath the control room).

I couldn't mix with a computer besides me, the noise would drive me nuts. My Avantone MixCube that I use for mono checking has a bit of a hum and that's bad enough to hear if there's silence. BTW, Avantone promised a solution that never came, pretty disappointing!

Also need to build an enclosure for my PC's. My fear is keeping the computers cool. Read Mossenberg's post with pictures with great intrest. How much space in your inclosure, and did you include any fans? Do you have a vent for hot air to escape?

Anyone got some formulas so the above specs can be calculated?
