My wife was sleeping last night (strep Throat) so i didn't get a chance to experiment... but that would my question as well..

I have set my DAW / monitor speakers up the longer way as apposed to the shortest side of the room, but you have got me thinking now .

In a rectanglular room, would it be best to always position speakers to the shortest wall as a starting point? My concern being that the speakers are much closer to the corners in this setup.
Almost always, and here's why: if you're shooting across the short dimension you're ensuring that your primary mode (which will be the strongest one along that axis) is going to be higher and more troublesome than it would be the other way. For example, if you have a room that's 9'x12' and you're shooting down the long dimension you're first mode will be at 47Hz...not such a big deal. The 9' dimension on the other hand gives you a primary at 64Hz. That's a problem.

The other question is a good one. The thing is, the smaller the room the more compromises you have to make. Yes, you'll be closer to the corners but it's the lesser of two evils compared to facing the short dimension and nearly ensuring that you'll be sitting in a null or a big peak.

Thanks for your reply Frank, really appreciate it.

It makes alot of sense to me, as I have noticed a null at the ideal mix spot, but moving back a little brings back the missing bass (not so great though), and more boom at the back wall and corners.

Next question: would around 4-6 100mm traps help reduce my null in my current position, being the longer way? I just finished setting my gear up in this position (my fault ), and it's a real pain changing this setting at this point. I know it can be changed for the better, and perhaps in 6 months or so, this would be a perfect excuse for me to change the layout. Can I make a good improvement using some traps with the way i'm setup at current?

Thanks in advance.

Sure, it'll help...every bit helps. As a matter of fact, you'll probably notice a pretty big difference. To get it to a really good place will probably take more than that, but you have to start somewhere.
