Did the searching, now the drop ceiling question

I did a bunch a searches on GS today and I'm now posting some questions for clarification. This quote caught my eye.

if it's a drop ceiling..just replace some inserts with grates and the air space between the drop and ceiling will be a great trap.

This caught my attention as I have a low (7ft) drop ceiling filled with the standard hard tiles. Each grate has 2 tiles stacked in it for more mass and pink fluffy above into the joists. After reading this I wondered if this indeed would be a good idea as I had never seen it discussed before when talking about drop ceiling issues. I would think you would have to add a piece of thin poster baord above the grate to keep dust and insulation from coming into the studio. Would the poster board add to much reflectance for such a small ceiling. These grates would only be for the rear 9x4 section of the ceiling as I already have a 4x4 cloud above mixpoint. Assuming this is a good idea, how many squares in that 9x4 rear ceiling should be replaced with grates.

My room dimensions are 12x9x7 and the room has 22 traps already, so it is well treated.

Thanks!

That's just wrong.

For a small room with a low ceiling like that I'd remove the hard tiles you have, leaving only the fluffy fiberglass above. Then dress it with soft fabric.

If the ceiling were higher, then you could take out some tiles, fill above the ceiling with rigid fiberglass/rock wool and replace the old tiles with fabric. Ethan is definitely right in this case though...just take the whole thing out, leave the insulation and finish with fabric.

Hi Frank,
I am stuck with the drop ceiling. The former owner finished the walls with 1/2" T&G pine glued and screwed after the ceiling went up, so pulling the ceiling grid would leave a 2.5 ft gap between the top of the walls around the entire room to top of the joists.. The second problem is a double teed gas main running 6 inches below the joist line. There are four gas pipes snaking through the ceiling.

The drop ceiling is already packed full of fluffy. Do you think the best compromise is to just pull as many hard tiles as I can, make some fabric stretched 2x2 pine frames and just replace each hard tile with these fabric frames. This way at least I'm getting the benefit of some trapping from the insulation in the ceiling and getting rid of the hard tiles influence on the room.

If you're stuck with the ceiling, then that's certainly a viable option. Better than the drop ceiling, that's for sure.

Thanks, Frank. I'll post some pictures of everything I have done to the studio soon, so you guys can see your theory put into practice.
