Thanks guys, but again, I am looking for reasonable alternatives as I do not have a readily available source or a 703/705 type material.

Dont neglect the floor.... the ceiling can be looked at sure but if say, a shiny, cheap ass, fake wood floor is bouncing crap you dont want up into all the mic's - that will get you too.... and using compression will just highlight the accoustic problems

These materials are both quite porous and have quite a textured surface, and they are much more readily available in my neck of the woods. I am mainly looking for additional bass trapping, maybe a bit of general mid and high frequency diffusion as well, but much less important for me right now.

I am hoping that if I could stack layers of either of these materials to form 2 to 4 inch blocks I could get some decent results.

Thanks.

the drummer's out on the deck

A friend of mine spent a lot of money building a big acoustically treated studio only to lose the lease on the space over financial woes. I was talking to him about how I was consistently happy with my results tracking everything except drums and brass. He surprised me by suggesting I record these OUTSIDE! True those instruments were built to sound best at parades, football games, and during Roman warfare. So if the weather forecast looks good... (Some drummers would welcome the competition from sirens and helicopters, though bird droppings could be a problem.)

Also, everyone's probably had that experience of how lively a room becomes when emptied of furniture on move-out day. Professional studios are empty of normal house clutter and therefore require a greater degree of acoustic treatment from day 1. So maybe leave the bookshelf, the bed in the corner, and the tapestry on the wall. It will look cluttered but sound better. Bass traps don't make much sense to me because it seems the mids and higher frequencies are more likely to be problematic. But I agree that low ceilings (8.5' or less) must be treated, dampened, though not sure 4" of insulation is necessary. A couple layers of burlap wrapped around an artist's canvas (that ugly painting in the shed...) might suffice? Unless you are recording metal? In which case, see paragraph above and pray for good weather.

It is a pity that what makes sense isn't always what is right. Welcome to Gearslutz.
