Thread Starter | built this desk this weekend
just to show you that anyone can do this, i actually did this desk over the weekend. i was tired of having stuff in different places and just decided to go and make my own. i figured if it collapsed i could just set it back up the old way
well 290 bucks at lowes and here you go
the cabinets are 12 u, and i meant to have 2 and 4u racks off the shlf but i measured a little wrong and with wheels on the desk it was really high so i nixed the racks on the shelf
i have a little room to grow so i am not to worried about it
i really like hoaving everything right there in front or to the side of me
anyway, birch 3/4 inch playwood, 2x4's pine, some screws, paint and 12u racks rails
and a good friend to lend a hand. about 6 hours worth of work, no real plans.
looks kinda rough since i don't have any finishing tools, but for those hwo might be wondering if they can build something, believe me, if i can and it works, you can

Keep in mind the 3/4 ply is a perfect substrate for plastic laminate, as is cheap-ass particle board if you ever get interested in that. Should you ever need to refinish, you can probably lay it over what you've already got. I moved from wood finishes to that for my studio stuff long ago and love it. It doesn't move like wood, and if it's done well, it'll look about the same as when you made it for a long time. It's actually quite a bit easier than much of the woodwork and definitely easier than most decent finishes. About all you need is a small cheap handheld router and a piloted straight cutting bit. I did black as well, with some oak trim on most of mine. You can usually get black a little cheaper than others and there's a "vertical grade" (thinner) which is even less. You can also mix the black with black melamine in places where it doesn't need to be that durable. Here's a really good book on it if you ever want to look into it.
Just passing that on. If I had tried it back when I started, I may have liked my old stuff enough not to have torn it all apart over the years.
George (and enjoy the desk - looks comfortable)

beautiful desk man
i noticed that you, and alot of people, have monitors that face the back of the room. i've heard that ideally, monitors should be angled towards your head in an equilateral triangle. but alot of people don't seem to do that. why is that?
i also noticed that monitors are alot of times spaced very far apart and to achieve this "equilateral triangle listening", would you have to stand a good distance from the desk?
sorry, i'm not trying to threadjack |

Hey
thanks for the compliments! the desk has been in service a couple of weeks now and is working out really well.
it is a mixed logic M24 controller, and a yamaha n12 to the left that is my sound card
i def would do a couple of things differently next time around, like the idea mentioned above about the laminate. stuff still sticks a little to this paint! even dry for weeks now
also the lower cabinets i made to big, i way overbuilt it for gear and its hard to crawl behind and get to stuff, they are to long
on the bright side, i could plant a car on it and it probably woudn't give
anyway, i learned its not to hard to do this, and next time i would spend more time on some of the nicer touch's and i think it would be a real winner

Did you make your wrist/arm pad or was it a 'premade'?

ah the arm rest, thats my fav piece
i made it
its just a 2x4 with some foam i got at a fabric store and pleather wrapped around it, stapled underneath and then screwed up from the bottom
if i had to do that again though i would probably just use a 1x4 since it sits up pretty high.
now my arms don't hurt though |

Man, this is really inspiring. I've been bitching and moaning to my wife about how I want a producer's desk on racks but a nice one costs.....
What you built would be fine with me and I think even some one as unhandy as myself could pull it off (maybe not in 6 hours). Seeing the progress shots makes it real, it's like "Shit I've done that!" .
Thanks! Off to HD or Lowes....whichever...

Hey
Sorry hadn't seen this, I built it Fromm a 2x4 with foam I glued on it and then I wrapped it with pleather and stapled that to the board. Once that was done I just set it on the table and screwed it on from the bottom up
