The stupidest things I've heard about studio construction all came out of my own mouth...

"It'll only take a few months."
"It'll just cost a few thousand dollars."
"I'll bet I can round up a bunch of friends to help me with this."
"5/8 drywall isn't all that heavy."
"I don't need to wear a respirator."
"2 boxes of 703 should be more than enough."
"6 tubes of caulk should be more than enough."
"I'm sure this will still look level in the morning when I'm sober."
"I need some music to listen to while building. I think it'd be really fun to get an iPod and put nothing but the Richard Cheese discography on it."
"I have 5 drills. That's more than I'll ever need."
"I have 5 different types of saws. That's more than I'll ever need."

Anyone have a time machine I can borrow? I think I need to go back to 2006 and give myself a serious ass whoopin'.

"It'll only take a few months."

Took me 6 months to build 2 rooms. I planned for it to take 2.

"It'll just cost a few thousand dollars."

Took me 3000$ after I built it up in sketchup and figured out the fastest and cheapest layout that was still functional. I had no idea how much it would take so I let it guide itself doing things the hard way.. Myself.

"I'll bet I can round up a bunch of friends to help me with this."

I had 2 friends help for a total of about 20 minutes or REAL work..

"5/8 drywall isn't all that heavy."

At first I couldn't lift one at all. By the end of 6 months I was able to lift and hold a panel at head level while screwing it down..

"I don't need to wear a respirator."

I went out and bought one the first day I started working with the drywall. I was coughing so hard the folks at Lowes thought I was gonna die right there in the paint isle..

"2 boxes of 703 should be more than enough."

10 bags of mineral wool down..

"6 tubes of caulk should be more than enough."

3 cases of caulk down..

"I'm sure this will still look level in the morning when I'm sober."

I work better drunk! I don't feel the muscle/joint/head pain until the morning.

"I have 5 drills. That's more than I'll ever need."

I have two drills, 4 batteries and a set of bits.. no matter how vigilant I was, I ALWAYS found that the battery in my drill was dead as I was holding a 75lb drywall panel up on a wall while trying to screw it down with one hand and a mouth full of screws..

"I have 5 different types of saws. That's more than I'll ever need."

Tablesaw, reciprosaw, keyholesaw, radial arm saw, jigsaw, hacksaw. Gotcha beat by one!

I got a couple:

"hey, I'll be there to help FOR SURE this time! You can count on me!"

"just follow the directions in the book and you'll have a world class studio!"

Actually, when all was said and done, I ended up with a mitre saw, 2 table saws (got rid of the first one eventually), 2 band saws (got rid of the first of those eventually too), sawzall, rotozip, concrete saw, jigsaw, multiple hacksaws, a wood hand saw...and that's in addition to the circ saw and another saw or two that i already had before starting on anything.

I also picked up one of the most gratuitous power tools ever somewhere along the way: a concrete planer.

"I am going to use blankets as walls. That should iso pretty well."

"Does anyone know where to pick up egg cartons CHEAP?"

"I have a basement (sorry no layout) how much will it cost to build a pro studio?"

"I slanted the walls so I don't need to treat the rooms."

"I make my drum room 10x10x10. I am hoping to have a nice open live sound."

"I bought a bunch of old records and put them on the walls to diffuse the sound"

On man this could go on and on and on and on and on.

1 - Eggs boxes - beats everything

2 - Can't I just put rockwool in the wall to soundproof it ?

3 - and my favorite - why do I need an acoustical engineer ? I just copy one of those designs on the internet

One pub that my band used to play at regularly had complaints about the noise.

So, to 'soundproof' one of the large windows they put a sheet of 1" thick polystyrene over the window.

I tried to tell them but they just looked at me funny.....

I worked in a 20x20x10 room owned by a bass player friend who had a phobia about bass trapping, as he was convinced that installing traps would absorb all the low frequencies.

I don't need a sump pump, my basement never gets water in it.

So.... I walk into a place for a consult; they're having some problems with acoustics, including isolation problems between control, studio, and iso spaces. They tried one solution:

"We put some foam on the walls for soundproofing"

OK, that's a common enough mistake, but brace yourselves for the next one... They had a guy do the interior construction who gave them a good deal since he usually charges a bunch more for all the fancy offices he builds. I notice the drop ceiling... I climb up and take a look at what's above... this is when I notice the walls dividing the spaces don't actually go all the way to the structure's ceiling. They have walls that stop at the drop ceiling, and there's just open space a couple feet above, so the ceiling tiles are all that's blocking a huge flanking path.

Flanking paths are a big deal. Another one I see often is people who either put weather stripping around a door, but no threshold below, or a threshold with no weather stripping. They get a heavy door, and then leave a flanking path so the mass of the door is going to be of no help. "Hey, I did 2 out of 3 things right!" Remember a chain and its weakest link!
