Measuring response of Barefoot MM27's in my room...what do you think?

Hi all...just received my pair of MM27's and have set them up and am trying to get a feel for the bass response in my room. My room is 15' X 25' with a 9'8" ceiling.

Measuring with a Radio Shack SPL meter at 80db I'm getting the following variations (no corrections made to the RS SPL readings):

200 Hz 0 dB
160 Hz +4 dB
125 +2
100 -4
80 -1
63 0
50 -5
40 -5
31 -1

Can I do better than this? No bass traps as of yet. Thanks.

And yes the MM27s are very revealing.....

Bass response needs to be measured at very high resolution - at least 1/24 octave or 1 Hz spacing. Spot checking at third octave frequencies tells you very little. The LF response below was measured in a 16 by 10 room. Note the peak/dip pair at 110 and 122 Hz where the response varies a staggering 32 dB across a range smaller than one musical whole step. When measured at third octaves this room would appear much better than it really is.

Assuming you have a computer connected to your system, I suggest one of the following three software programs:

ETF, Windows, $150

FuzzMeasure, Mac, $150

Room EQ Wizard, Windows and Mac and Linux, Freeware

This article explains how I use ETF, but the principles apply to all such programs.

Or skip measuring and just go right to the bass traps. No matter what you measure, you still need as many bass traps as you can manage.
