Control rooms in Alton Everest's book

Nearly every control room displayed in Alton Everest's - Master handbook of Acoustics, seems to have the speakers shooting into the short side of the room.

Why?

Two reasons.

1) the control rooms are large enough that rear wall relections can be treated with diffusion; and,
2) those big things called mixing consoles.

Right, recording "studios" today are very different than 40+ years ago. Small rooms have very different requirements than large rooms.
