Room layout

I've got a rough plan for my new room. This is in the basement. The walls top and left of the drawing are studded out from the basement walls. The rest are just interior walls. Appreciate any input.

That all looks fine, but a room that size needs as much bass trapping as possible. So plan to treat wall-ceiling corners too, and possibly the entire wall behind you.

Thanks, Ethan. Do you mean the areas where the corners and ceiling meet, or the entire perimeter?

Also, is 2" Rockboard overkill for the mid/high absorbers?

Entire perimeter. Floor corners are good too if you have places that can accommodate traps.

Thanks again, Ethan. I'm trying to figure out how much material to get. I'd like to get the majority of the sewing done before my seamstress leaves for a while in June.

I'm going with the trap in a bag from another thread for the corners. I'll have to think about the ceiling. Hmm. If I split a panel longways and make the cover with a flap on each side, I could put grommets in the flaps to hang them up...

I've about decided to go with full corner traps filled with R-30, and make all else like the drawing (adding ceiling/wall traps).

Do I need to put panels on the walls back in the recording space, or leave them open?

Yes. A room that size needs as much bass trapping as possible, not just in the front of the room.

Not even close... Actually space them off the wall if you can 2" to make them work even lower.

Thanks, guys. Ethan, I'm going to build a fairly large trap in the back wall, I was asking about the side walls. Although really, with 2' corner traps, there won't be much side wall showing in the recording area.

I will have a 4x4 x8"deep trap in the back wall (4" fiberglass batt, 4" air space). Is it necessary to caulk the corner joints and where the back is nailed on?

It'd be better still to not have a back at all...or am I misunderstanding? Even if you built the panels with the 2" or 4" air gap in the frame you wouldn't need a back...it wouldn't hurt you in that case, but it's not necessary. If you didn't build them with an air gap and you're planning to stand them off the walls 2" or 4", then don't build a back.

The panel will actually go through the back wall. I took out closet doors, and just framed it up 4x4 centered to the front wall. That way I can get 8" deep and not lose any inside space. So it will have a back.

Or would a fabric back be better? It'll poke through into an area where the well, water softener, and water heater live, so I can use anything I want.
