| The best drapes will have inch-thick rigid fiberglass or acoustic cotton behind them. I don't know of a place to buy anything like that, but you can probably sew that easily in an hour or two. --Ethan

| thx for the replies... checked out that rosebrand.com .. it seems to be about the same thickness as my e-bay cheap-o black out drapes.. though it costs 5 times as much... with say 1/4" thick fabric drapes and no insulation behind them, will i get any effect? high frequency absorption? flutter stop? obviously its not going to get any bass.. (which i also need) its got to be better than straight glass right? its in front of a sliding glass door (entrance to my studio) so i need it to look good . i fear with my sewing abilities it will look not-so-good to, say the least, from the back side if i sew some acoustical cotton on... thx |

| Everest discusses velour material for drapes, and also the effect of creating folds with the material. Apparently this is has a pronounced effect at 500 and 1000 Hz. One company that sells 25 ounce velour claims that their absorption coefficients are: Results of ASTM C423-09a Standard Test for Sound Absorption Frequency (Hz) 125 250 500 1000 2000 4000 Absorption Coefficient 0.20 0.57 0.91 0.95 1.02 1.05 I wound up buying 25 ounce velour from Rosebrand. The jury is out on blackout drapes. I bought some off ebay b/c i didn't want the sunlight to stain the velour, but i wonder if they merely reduce airspace b/t the velour and wall/window. |

| thx, you guys gave me a nudge in the right direction... building my own drapes with velour seems to be the best cost/value the 21oz velour from rosebrand.. would cost about $75 for 5yds - enough to cover my door with folds.... (close to the price of the cheap-o blackout drapes) i was looking at the pre-made drapes before.. man are they expensive! thanks for the help, mike |
