| Gear maniac | Convert spare room for mixing - worth it?
Hey folks, Next to my room is a room that used to be guestroom. However, I rarely have guests so this is kind of unused and I was thinking about converting it into a mixing room. I know its probably too small (my budget probably too) to convert it in something professional. Im doing assistent jobs and mixing mainly, but I need/want a room where I can try a few things and where I can mix properly. I dont want to record anything in there, and I dont have to care about sound emission too much since Im the only one living there. So basically I just want to get the best sound possible. Id like some opinions on this: How much do you think is possible? I will probably have problems with the bass response and i know its actually a bit tiny. But its the best I can get and its "free". My plans up to now would be to put frames on every wall (depth: 12cm) and fill it with rockwool, some bass traps in the corners and maybe a ceiling absorber as well. Im trying to read as much about acoustics as I can and hopefully this room is worth it. The blue objects are for orientation. I think that might be the best direction to put things and make the best use of the space. The area behind the blue wall will be the "machine" room (theres a door which is hard to see in the picture). There wont be any console, just a control surface and 3-4 racks, and 2 pairs of monitors. Thank you for your time |

you can also check out Ethan's RealTraps - Home or GIK Acoustics web sites for ideas on how to place your absorbers.

Hey Thank you for your answers! One thing Im curious about is the health risk of rookwool (and mineralwool, too). I read about the risk of cancer and other stuff when being exposed to this stuff's fibre. Ive never built something like this, so I was wondering what to do about it. I saw some constructions in the picture threads and never noticed anybody who had some sort of "emisson" blocker in front of the wool, just some sort of fabric. Is that save enough? Or is it even some sort of special fabric? I read a german article about it and they used "basotect" between the rockwool and the fabric to stop any fibre from the wool. However, basotect is expensive and I dont know if I need it at all. Does anybody know about this problem? Oh and btw, I decided to convert that room once I got all the money. Im pretty excited ![]() thank you guys |
