Thread Starter | Guitar cabinet Isolation cabinet Hello, This is my first post here. I am a long time engineer and long time lurker. Gearslutz is a very good board. I would like to build an isolation cabinet to put guitar cabinets in. Has anyone done this? Are there any photos or recommendations? I have considered building a speaker isolation cabinet but some people prefer their own 4x12s and the power handling required for a Marshall full out is tricky. I would like to build an isolation cabinet to put guitar cabinets in. Thank you for any words of wisdom. Best, Ken Vancouver, Canada www.Pacificav.com |

Thread Starter | OK, I asked the guys at the Speaker Clinic in Vancouver and they told me a pair of EV12S or EV12L is the way to go. Also Celestion Sidewinder can take 150 watts. These two can handle the power of balls to the wall modern amp like Triple Rectifier and sound pretty good. Still I would like to know if anyone has done this. I may just build a huge cabinet that will fit a 4 x 12 inside for isolation or else design a 2 x 12 iso cab. There are many single 12 cabs but they won't take big power. Thanks |

| Iso Cab I just built an iso cab and I'll tell you gotta go with rockwool or owens 703 at least 3" thick. That foam isn't going to do a thing but tickle those freq. coming from that cabinet. If you're interested, check out my cabinet on the post titled iso cab reply #74 and further down I've posted a link to a video clip on youtube. Cheers, Paul |

Thread Starter | She only takes 80 watts with the stock speaker. I think to really build a pro one you need two speakers. Like I said, 240 watts was a square wave peak measured from a Marshall 100 watt head. Does anyone have plans for a 2 x 12" cab? I thinking Baltic Birch with sand inside and casters. b. |

Yeah tube heads definitely put out more wattage then rated for when dimed. Square waves at 240 watts are no good, thats one hell of a peak. One big side note you should consider here is in our isolation cabinet (as in any iso cab) the speaker has a sealed air chamber on BOTH sides of the speaker. This creates a lot more air resistance for the speaker to fight then in a normal cabinet, so overall wattage handling is a bit better. Same thing as how speakers handle power better in sealed enclosures over ported enclosures. Iso cabs handle power better then sealed enclosures x 2! =) Basically I'm saying you don't need to worry about having twice the amount of power handling as your head is rated for. I've dimed a Peavey XXX through one of our cabs with the 80 watt speaker before and the XXX is rated at 120 watts. We did retube it with EL34's however. I don't believe a 2x12 Iso cab is going to make anything more "pro". I spent a lot of time designing and planning, considering all the alternatives and options. Making a 2x12 iso cab as good as ours would be a monster. It's already bulky enough as it is a 1x12! You might have to hire some roadies for it!! -Alex

| There's no need to reinvent the wheel. This is conceived along the same lines as what you want to build and it will do the job: Silent Speaker Chamber. Instead of putting your whole amp inside, you use this as an extension cabinet. Simple. -Al |

| Wow... These things SEEM cool. Wonder if there are all kinds of sonic bummer in the fact that the acoustic space for the mic and the speaker to move around in is TINY.... you know, frequency buildup and such. Why are they goddamn expensive??? F-It! Im gonna build one! |

I was thinking of following this idea but lining the inside with owen's 703 4 inches thick, would this work well? I plan on building two of these one for a 2x12 VHT cab and another for a Fender Bassman 410 combo. | |
