| How about floating the speakers? Hi, I have been thinking... Is it a good idea to float the speakers? I know people say you should use rigid stands, but how about putting your speakers on springs? Or hanging them from the ceiling using resilient hangers, or using magnetical floating like this: PS Audio - Tips & Tricks ? This would surely eliminate the need for heavy speaker stands... |

| People seem to report good results using Primacoustic's Recoil Stabilizer.

| I'd be careful with springs- You could be introducing un wanted resonances. . . .that Idea with the tennis balls is pretty cool though |

| I floated some Event 8's years ago and didn't sound all that bad but did not help much either. I had them on four chains hanging from big eye hooks in the ceiling and they were on boards with the foam Primacoustics holders. It really was a long time ago so can't remember what the overall effect was but now my setup is Dynaudio AIR 15's and you can see my placement in my small control room here MySpace.com - EarWitnessStudios - 33 - Male - WHITTIER, California - www.myspace.com/earwitness word sam |

| All my speakers are on 50 durometer sorbothane pads. You can buy a 12"x12" sheet from mcmaster-carr.com, cut it into 1.5" squares and have enough to do a 5.1 room as well as mains. Sorbothane is a soft polyurethane product that compresses, dampens and has incredible resiliency. think of a 1" thick Dr. Scholls shoe insert. The stuff works great.

There were no resonance issues, and they were out of the way enough to make room for more studio real-estate. Would I do it again - probably not. Unless I had a similar situation and couldn't find a better solution. IMO, good stands are better.

| What are alternatives you are thinking of? Genelec recommends speakers in soffits be either securely attached or "floating on 8 Hz spring systems. Andre |
