A great sounding drum room, but how??

Hi there :-)

Anyone here knows where I can find some advice on how to make a great sounding drum room?

My room is build with bass traps, so the problem is not in the low frequency area.

The room has parallel walls and the best advice I have got so far, is to dampen the walls with mineral wool... But i don't want a totally dead sounding room. I want a room with great acoustics and reverberations, but on the other hand the decay time must not be too long, so I can't control e.g. cymbals later on in the mix...

To me a good sounding drum room is a very ambient airy room, but with a short decay, like a kind of gated reverb set to about 300, 500 ms. Is that possible to achieve with the right blend of absorbers and diffusers? Is it possible to calculate somehow...?

This must has been posted before, but I can't seem to find the info I'm looking for, so any help would be very appreciated!!

Thanks a lot and sorry for the bad grammar! :-)

Peter

Hi Peter,

for a part of the answer maybe look here. It is the only reverberation time calculator with OC 703 and OC 705 (glass fiber wool) that I know of:

You might want to take a look at my mastering room. We tracked drums in there a couple of weeks ago and it came out really well.
I have a lot of solid maple surfaces with fabric covered 2" 703 on the walls/ceiling. It's just over 3000cu/ft.

Regards,
Bruce

What are your room's dimensions? It's impossible to advise you further without knowing that.

+1 to what Ethan wrote about dimensions. What and how much diffusion do you have right now?

Plus the other standard question. What is your budget?

I'll get back tomorrow with some info on the room dimensions. I will try to scan the architect's plan of the room and put it up, so you can get a clearer picture of the dimensions...

Thanks!!

I don't have a specific limit on my budget. The rooms are not that big, so the expenses for materials and craftsmen, is acceptable. But I'm hoping I can keep the amount within about 20.000 dollars.

I prefer to work in wood and wool, but it could also be a combination that includes form bats, like Realtraps or something similar.

Thanks,
Peter
