Corner mix position? Tricky basement.

Hi guys,

I've searched around a lot and can't seem to find a good answer to this.

I'm am currently dissatisfied with my layout, both sonically and from a use of space perspective. It's a tricky room, to say the least.

Right now I'm facing straight into the top wall (on the RH side).

The whole bottom wall in the diagram has a lower ceiling than the rest of the basement which makes the the upper right portion of the room where I need to be (I have 7' ceilings there). It's a great space, newly renovated with lots of light.

I should add this is a project studio for my own compositions and arrangements, editing and mixing of location recording, with the occasional overdub with other musicians. I work here principally alone, and don't feel the need to have a separate control room.

My question is: what are the drawbacks to making the mix position face directly into the (top RH) corner of the room? I feel like it would improve my symmetry at the listening position and make the whole room work a little better. (I'm building my own bass traps as I go and using a suspended carpet for a cloud, which I will replace with a proper trap).

Any thoughts? Apologies for the poor Sketchup - I just started using it

Oh sorry! Yes I'll redo the room with dimensions tonight, overall space is under 400sq. feet.

I've never seen a room oriented into the corner - is it totally bad news? The 38% absolutely is not workable for the space because I use the other half for cello instruction, even more problematic is that I have a large open space on the left ear and not on the right. That is the main motivation for wanting to try the corner.

That's why you never see it.

Seriously, best for that room is to have the speakers at the bottom of the drawing facing up. Centered left and right.

In that case stay closer to the front wall.

I agree with Ethan. How do you plan on treating the room? I hope pletty of bass trapping.

Thanks for the input guys I really appreciate it.

The problem with that whole lower side of the room is the drywall fitted around the duct work brings the ceiling down almost to 6', which (currently not treated) sounds quite claustrophobic. The 7' in the upper RH corner is much better.

OK so here's a question: if I adopt your setup, how would I deal with a extremely low and irregular shaped ceiling? If give away more than a couple of inches heads will start running too close for comfort...
