Hey Guys

I'm actually a noob to this place so hey.
Well I'm actually looking into acoustic solutions for my small home based mixing studio considering that from what I'm told, the monitors that I'm getting for it could pose as a problem in the bass end (Event ASP 8's) since it's a small room.

I'm no acoustician and I'm printing out Ethan Winer's guide to read over in my leisure but would a tool like Room EQ Wizard Home Page help me in finding what to place?

Since at times I work with big punchy music, since this is a small room, I would guess I'd need to get as many bass traps as humanly possible. What I wonder is though is if I make all of them Broadband do I risk loosing some frequency response?

Currently this is my room. I dont have the Monitors yet, but it's a WIP:

I would like to make my own wood frame based bass traps to get rid of some of this foam. The foam isn't glued but stapled in the wall so they can be removed without much problem. From what I hear, foam is not the most ideal medium for acoustic treatment. Where could I find an explanation why? Also I could still use some of the foam for high and mid tunning right ? Though foam isn't ideal, it did manage to get rid of this ring that I got whenever I clap my hands. And the bed is a good bass trap too huh lol. There are also some absorption foam on the ceiling.

I researched the Owens Corning Insulation for my custom bass traps and the price isn't bad (I think $79 for 6 sheets of 2" thick). For everything else though like the wood and such, what would be the cost (even though it's determined by the rate the specific store gives you, how much did it cost you)? More than likely, I'll need to make about 7 of these (though I don't know precisely cause I don't know how to measure my room).

Last thing to note about what's going to be happening with the setup, the monitors are going on the desk where those two nooks are (where the books are and behind where the lamp is) where I'll be opening the back. Not too far from it is a wall where I have accoustic foam situated (though only 1" thick). It was suggested that with those size monitors that I use 2" thick absorption instead since it's not too far from the wall (and the properties of the monitors help with close wall distance positioning from what I've read from SoundonSound.com). I would guess to add bass traps (broadband) behind there where that line of foam on the first pic is illustrated.

Anyway, as much help would be greatly appreciated. I'll probably be writing down the equipment I need and check the prices for it at my nearest hardware store.

This will tell you how bad your room is, but that is about it. Not that you should not test the room, but trust me broad band bass traps are going to be called for in a most/all small rooms. It is nice though to see the before and after treatment graphs to confirm your money spent/hard ass work spent.

I would start that way and if at the end you still have a few nulls and peaks you want to deal with then make some tuned traps. At the start though use a bass trap that has limp membrane to the front to help reflect some of the high end.

Foam works ok on the early reflections, so you may want to start with just getting bass traps in the corners and use the foam for the early reflections.

Well I own GIK Acoustics, so I get the special employee rate.

Would you mind posting a diagram of this? Here are a few tips.

*Set up facing the shortest wall.
*Start with where you sit to be 38% of the room length from the front wall
*Bass traps floor to ceiling in all wall to wall corners.
*Panels in early reflection points on right/left wall and ceiling
*Panels that are 4" or more thick behind each monitor
*Panels that are 4" or more thick on back wall (behind mix spot)
*Diffusion on back wall around panels and diffusion and back 1/3 of side walls.

I only question the need for diffusers. From what I’ve read, the uses of diffusers are mainly necessary for larger area studios rather than small studios which can get away with just absorption. I meen the room is only 11'x9'x12'

For the traps I'll be making, I'll be using this tutorial:

Hufo, definitely start with bass trapping. Diffusion is icing on the cake in a room your size. Finish the cake first. :-) I think diffusion certainly won't hurt, but get some good bass trapping in there first.

Yes and this is why I noted to put the panels on the back wall with diffusion around it.
