AutoCAD and Revit users?

Hello. My first post under studio construction. I am kind of a jack of trades. Certainly not a master at any. Closest would be electrical, but I have worked nearly every trade. Pretty up on finishes. I have designed and built 3 studios so far.

Anyhow. I currently do some AutoCAD VBA programming. Most of my clients have used Architectural Desktop, but most are moving to Revit. I am curious to know what you guys have been using for designing. Anybody doing anything with ACAD VBA or AutoLISP for calculating room notes, etc? How about software for running simulations?

Long time Autocad user here... but I'm no poweruser, autocad is to me as a ruler and pencil.

I've tried to do some things in revit, because it looked very very promising. But after trying to do a bit more complex and non-standard things I just quit, because it was hopeless. Maybe with some extensive training... but I hear only similar stories from around, even from offices where they tried some simple projects and had professional training for it.

I have used Archicad and I now use SketchUp.

About room simulations for room modes prediction you can use FEM software like FEMLAB but it is a tremendous ammount of work which is not really necessary unless the room has a odd geometry or the client was to pay me for a service like that ! And like any software the end results depends on the input data etc etc... otherwise you can use an excel spreadhsheet

Another software is CATT. It is used mainly for large room acoustics but for small room acoustics it also has its benefits. It does not take in accout room modes nor low frequency behavour.

Are there any freeware/cheap room design applications out there? PC or Mac, doesn´t matter?

And room simulation software? All expensive?

I´m about to convert a free room in my apartment on a little "mix room" since my old studio is being sold...

no, but the cheapest ones suck... and room simulation software is mostly used for large room applications. this will change in a near future
